UAA Anchorage Campus Facilities Maintenance and Operations Department is hiring multiple full-time labor trades and crafts positions with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. We offer flexible work schedules, stable employment, and commitment in developing our employees.

For this job pool, we are actively recruiting for Plumber positions in the CT1, CT2, and CT3 categories. The Duties Section of this announcement describes the available potential positions we are recruiting for.

Duties:

General Duties All Positions: Establishes and promotes good teamwork and safety cultures. Promotes organizational improvements or increased efficiencies.

Maintains all required certifications. Be experienced in using hand and power tools. Be computer proficient utilizing Microsoft software (i.e. Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access and Outlook). Possess and demonstrate good organizational and communication skills.

May be required to work outside this job description on occasion, for snow removal, emergency response, assisting other departments, or other non related tasks.

Evenings and weekends are covered by standby scheduled coverage and emergency call out needs. The incumbent is subject to call in and standby duty after normal work hours to respond to emergencies.

CT1 Apprentice Plumber. Performs general position duties. Clean mechanical rooms, pick up trash, wipe down machinery. Attend all regulatory training as required, and maintain up-to-date documentation. Developing competencies across plumbing systems as well as computer proficiencies required by the job including: regularly performing workflow and status updates in the integrated work management system, familiarity with computerized building automation systems. Performs as an assistant on larger projects. Assist journeyman plumbers to maintain the campus facilities. Under supervision of a journeyman plumber, perform a variety of tasks in the operations, maintenance, preventative maintenance, repair, overhaul, installation and construction of plumbing related systems including: heating, cooling, humidification systems, boilers, pumps, fan coils and their associated controls. Respond to plumbing service requests as required. Will be snaking drains and sewer lines, repairing leaks on piping and plumbing fixtures. Perform preventative maintenance tasks and service on plumbing fixtures, and related equipment as needed.

CT2 Plumber. Performs and is versed in CT1 requirements. CT2 Plumber must have journeyman level experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing related systems; possess knowledge and skills to install, operate, maintain, and repair hydronic systems, boilers, humidification systems and cooling systems. Performs a variety of tasks related to operations, maintenance, preventative, repair, overhaul, installation and construction of plumbing related systems including heating, cooling humidification systems, boilers, pumps, fans coals, and their associated contras. Plumber completes estimates of materials and labor on various projects and works with the computerized building automation system including adjustments and monitoring.

CT3 Master Level Plumber. Performs and is versed in CT2 Plumbing requirements. Duties for this master level job class include proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing a variety of commercial plumbing systems. Performs as lead for complex projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

General KSAs for CT1, CT2, and CT3 positions:

● Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, interpret professional journals and technical procedures. Ability to read o&m manuals and building as-builts. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work independently and in a group setting including following, interpreting, and communicating instructions given by management; relating to management and other employees in a positive manner, making efforts to solve crew conflicts, and assisting in providing a productive and safe work environment.

● Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as pressures, frequency, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

● Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems (troubleshoot and identification of root cause), collect data, (research the product, review as-builts, review O&M data, and other online resources), establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

● Computer Proficiency: Capability to use computers for email, word processing, and creating bid estimates. Proficiency in computerized maintenance management systems and other software systems as required by the individual job requirements.

● Building codes, regulations, and safety standards: familiarity and working knowledge of codes and standards related to the applicable trade industry. Including but not limited to: AKOSHA, plumbing code, and ASRHA standards.

CT1 In addition to the general KSAs, CT1 must have skills and knowledge in the mechanical maintenance of plumbing systems.

CT2 in addition to the CT1 requirements, must have substantial journeyman level experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing related systems; possess knowledge and skills to install, operate, maintain, and repair hydronic systems, boilers, humidification systems and cooling systems.

CT3 In addition to the CT2 requirements, must have master level experience in the installation, operation, repair and maintenance of heavy commercial and industrial plumbing systems, such as air handlers, chillers, boilers, compressors, transfer systems, etc. Have the knowledge and ability to comprehend blueprints and schematics. Candidates must have a good working knowledge of computerized building automation and pneumatic control systems. Must understand building codes and adhere to those guidelines. Must be able to work safely and independently with little or no supervision.

Typical Experience

CT1- Assistant Plumber - apprentice level and/or 3 years of training or experience in Plumbing maintenance or as a laborer in construction or related field.

CT2 Plumber with 10 years of experience. Candidates who qualify for the interview will complete a CT2 competency test.

CT3 Master level Plumber with 15 years of experience. Candidates who qualify for the interview will complete a CT3 competency test.

Required Education and licenses

General: All positions require a High School Diploma or equivalent and a valid Alaska drivers license with a clean driving record, meeting University of Alaska safe driving standards. As part of the required University background check - UAA will obtain a driving history record from DMV to confirm candidates meet the UAA safe driving standards. Driver license info: Within your cover letter please state whether or not you have or can obtain a valid Driver’s License upon hire.

CT1 - Three years of experience with industrial tools and/or hand tools related to the trades. Preferred knowledge of building mechanical systems and maintenance of building systems.

CT2 Plumber - Must meet CT1 requirements and have commercial or industrial experience and have a valid State of Alaska certificate of fitness Journeymen Plumbing License. Preference for certifications in one or more of the following:

Preferred knowledge/experience/education/certification: 3rd class boiler operator license, siemens control training, humidification and refrigeration experience, building automation certification, fire alarm and electrical systems experience, journeymen plumbers certification, refrigeration certification or training, welding certification and fabrication experience.

CT3 Plumber must meet CT2 requirements and have master level experience in commercial facilities.

Preferred knowledge/experience/education/certification: 3rd class boiler operator license, Siemens control training, humidification and refrigeration experience, building automation certification, fire alarm and electrical systems experience, journeymen plumbers certification, refrigeration certification or training, welding certification, and fabrication experience.
