Position: Program Assistant

Location: 705 S. McClelland, Santa Maria CA, 93454

Museum Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 12-4

Position Summary:

The Program Assistant's primary responsibility is to improve and cultivate the visitor experience. While at the Discovery Museum, Program Assistants will have a working knowledge of the exhibits, the regular and special programming, and the overall mission and purpose of the Museum. Daily activity will include interacting with visitors, staff, and volunteers, checking in groups and facilitation exhibits, cleaning and maintaining the museum and administrative areas, assisting with special events, fundraisers, meetings and any other activity or program, on or off-site, that furthers the mission of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Learn and understand how the exhibits work and how to utilize that knowledge to ensure that our visitors have a positive, unique, and fun experience.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Take the lead in ensuring exhibits and Museum are clean and presentable to visitors

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Prep and teach weekly programs.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Answer phones and visitor questions as needed.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Promote memberships and special events while interacting with visitors.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Assess exhibit needs throughout the day to replenish supplies or straighten areas.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Accurately document daily visitor statistics and be able to accurately and neatly assist visitors with filling out membership applications, field trip requests, birthday party requests or any other communication between the museum and visitors

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Demonstrate highly developed organizational, planning, and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Ability to be a dynamic, outgoing leader, and communicate with visitors in a friendly and helpful way to ensure a positive visitor experience.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Strong ability to organize and coordinate several tasks at once.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Ability to communicate the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority when necessary.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Ability to lift heavy items and push a heavy cart

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Need to be able to be on feet most of the day walking up and down museum floor and standing on concrete.

ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Able to speak and read Spanish not required, but preferred.
