Wanted: Smart, Ambitious Social Science Grad to be Jr Consultant (Columbus)

Ohio, Columbus 00000 Columbus USA

Vacancy expired!

Overview

I am the President of a small trial consulting company looking for a Smart, Ambitious Social Science Grad Interested in Being a Trial Consultant-In-Training at an Established Jury Consulting Company.

This is an entry level, full-time professional salaried position. You will work from home, travel to project sites as necessary, and come to the Bay area as necessary for training and team work. Trial consulting is not a 9 to 5 job; travel and working long hours at times are requirements. To thrive, you need to enjoy a fast pace and have stamina as well as know how to take care of yourself. You will be expected to commit to finishing assigned work and projects in a timely way to meet deadlines. If these attributes of the job turn you off, read no further!

However, if you are smart, have a BA or MA in a social science field (sociology, anthropology, social psych or psychology are particularly relevant) have strong writing and data analysis skills, and are interested in apprenticing with a top trial consultant, I would love to talk with you! (Having a law degree does not qualify you. It does not automatically disqualify you, but trial consultants do not get paid like lawyers so don't expect a lawyer's salary.)

The Job

Your tasks will include:

Assisting in all phases of mock trial and focus group research, including research design, logistics, budgeting and project management, questionnaire design, running and moderating mock trials and focus groups, analyzing data and preparing reports and recommendations

- Conducting telephone interviews with mock jurors and real jurors

- Assisting with case intakes and drafting of proposals and budget estimates

- Attending client meetings and conference calls and taking useful notes

- Drafting juror questionnaires under the guidance of a senior consultant

- Creating datasets for, entering and producing reports on juror questionnaire data

- Assisting with community and venue survey research, including designing research instruments and compiling and analyzing data

- Assisting in the design, implementation and running of shadow juries

- Creating and maintaining in house databases

- Developing checklists and SOPs for routine report production and data analysis tasks

- Supporting consultants in producing marketing and continuing legal education materials based on social scientific research findings

- Developing online research protocols

- Working with our Research Assistant to drive litigation research reports to their conclusion in a timely way

The last item is core to your job description, as your primary goal is to relieve me of work that currently prevents me from dedicating more time to developing new business and service lines as well as teaching and mentoring.

Detail orientation is also key. With our Research Assistant, you will be expected to produce client-ready, properly formatted reports that are fully proofed and spell checked, with data that has been checked for errors and confirmed as accurate.

Salary will depend on experience, education and demonstrated aptitude. I have high expectations and I also am a great mentor and take good care of those who work with me. This is a position that will provide incredible opportunity to learn and grow for the right person. If you are that person, your work will help free up my time to allow me to grow the business and your salary will grow to reflect that.

The Candidate (i.e. You)

Because you will be working virtually for some of your time, self-discipline, organization, and good work habits are key. At other times, you will be working in teams on site at mock trials and trials, where good communication skills, patience and emotional self-regulation are key. You should have comfort with trying to figure things out for yourself first as well as comfort with asking questions when you know just enough to be dangerous and not enough to get the job done. You must have experience with social scientific data entry and analysis. You must be proficient at MS Word, Excel, and Power Point (although we will teach you a few tricks), have some training in statistics and at ideally have experience using stats and database software. Finally, and very importantly, you must be 100% fluent in English and have strong written and oral communication skills.

Experience with qualitative research such as interviewing, content analysis or media analysis is a plus.

To apply, please send your resume and a cover letter explaining why you think you are a good fit for the position, and why you think the position is a good fit for you. Include a writing sample of something that you wrote that you feel shows original thought or analysis. Also let us know the salary range you expect.
