Job Description

Facilities Development and Management, FM KE Facilities Services, seeks a motivated full time HVAC Refrigeration Technician to join the KE Facilities team to install, repair, overhaul and maintain heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems within complex research buildings.

Essential Duties

Troubleshoot, install, repair and overhaul refrigeration equipment and systems.

Maintain preventative maintenance records.

Read gauges and instruments and adjust mechanisms.

Operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines.

May drive university vehicles.

Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

The various types of spaces located within these buildings may include but are not limited to: Research laboratory space, Clean room spaces, High bay spaces and Administrative and office spaces.The various types of equipment located within these buildings may include but are not limited to: Humidity Controls, DDC Metasys Control Systems, Phoenix Control Systems, Phoenix Valve airflow control, VAV airflow control, Air Flow/Psychrometrics and Air Distribution, Air Balancing Air Handlers, Makeup Air Handlers, Air compressors, Air Dryers, Shaft and Pump Alignment, Environmental Growth Chambers, Ultra Low Temp Freezers, Corrosive Exhaust systems Perchloric Exhaust systems, Laboratory and General Exhaust systems, Variable Frequency Drives, Heating and Cooling equipment, Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers, Direct Expansion Heating and Cooling equipment, Chillers, Cooling Towers, Chill Water Cooling Systems, Chill Water Pumps, Boilers, Steam Pumps, Steam Condensate pumps and associated systems, Hot Water Pumps, Steam systems and associated steam traps, pumps and control devices and Clean Steam Generators.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE:Monday – Friday, 6:30am – 3:00pm

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of progressively responsible HVAC or refrigeration experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable skills, knowledge and abilities have been achieved. Some positions may require chlorofluorocarbons certification upon employment. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Desired Qualifications

Evidence of working within research laboratory, clean room, high bay, administrative and office spaces.

Evidence of being a graduate of accredited/certified HVAC Trade School.

Experience in electrical systems up to and including 480 volt 3 Phase systems.

Experience in commercial/industrial maintenance and repair; rebuilding; and installation of HVAC mechanical and refrigeration equipment

Experience in commercial/industrial HVAC troubleshooting for Heating/Cooling/ Electrical

Evidence of EPA 608 Universal certification

Knowledge of safe work practices

Evidence of effective communication skills

Working Environment

Utilize power tools (e.g. drills, generators, saws, lifts, vacuum equipment).

Climb ladders, ladder wells, and stairs.

Work off ladders using hand tools and power tools to include working off lift platforms and boom trucks at heights above six feet.

Use lifting, moving, and rigging equipment to safely move, transfer, or relocate heavy equipment.

Operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines.

Handle CFC refrigerant.

Work in adverse working conditions such as confined spaces (e.g. tunnels, man holes, vaults), dirty areas, low lighting, and extreme temperatures.

Stoop, bend, and reach.

Walk throughout campus/various research buildings.

Lift up to 75 pounds.

Ability to push and/or pull weight loaded maintenance cart.

May drive University vehicles.

May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator).

Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.

This position is located on our Tempe campus.

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than general operating funds. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.

Ability to obtain Chlorofluorocarbon Certification within six months of employment date.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include audiogram, asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test.

May participate in programs which involve adherence to program regulations, including physical exam, annual testing, x-rays, medication, vaccinations at ASU expense, and completion of a Health Surveillance Questionnaire.

This position requires working a paid rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.
