Summary of Position:
Responsible for the preparation of family style meals for residents and employees. This position is part-time and will work up 20 hours a week. Weekend availability preferred.
Essential Functions:
Demonstrates a clear understanding of the Covenant House Mission, philosophy, history and tradition(s) and the underlying values upon which the Agency is founded to the staff, youth and the community we serve
Understand and comply with all Agency policies and procedures.
Maintain a high level of ethical standards.
Ensure the safety of youth seen by CHA at all times.
Through the advisory/administrative process, continually recommend methods and techniques to improve all food service activities for CHA youth
Prepare meals based on approved cycle menu and number of anticipated individuals to be served in a cost effective and efficient manner.
All food must be prepared and served in accordance with the state nutrition guidelines as set forth in the "Alaska School Food Service Manual"
Assist in maintaining accurate records of food disbursements, ordering, and stocking in accordance with SOA/USDA program requirements.
Provide food orders on a timely basis in accordance with agency purchasing policy
Maintain all food service areas to meet and exceed State Health guidelines relating to sanitation and safety inspections.
Provide for receiving and using donations, food bank, and other supplies in the safest and most productive manner.
Report problems and assist in maintaining all food service equipment in a clean and safe manner.
Assist in working with special events requiring food services support, by ordering, contracting, or other means needed.
Perform other functions in the Food Services Program to meet the standards established
May supervise volunteers and / or contracted services.
Ability to work independently, using good judgment, and common sense
Keep supervisor fully informed at all times
Others duties as assigned
Minimum Education:
High school graduate. Post-secondary food service training desirable.
Minimum Experience:
Minimum of 1-2 years of food services experience either in institutional or commercial cooking. Familiarity with cycle menu planning management. Must possess Food Services Certification. Experience with SOA food service programs preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Demonstrated ability to communicate with adolescents in a direct, non-threatening manner.
Knowledge of maintaining food service budgets, supplies and inventories
Possess a Municipal food handlers certification or equivalent
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
Good customer service skills
Basic understanding of adolescent development and behaviors; demonstrate enjoyment of and ability to relate to at-risk youth and demonstrates empathy with the joys and pains of others
Strong ability to relate effectively with staff, youth, and community agencies;
Is approachable, builds rapport well and practices attentive and active listening.
Ability to address conflict well and manage difficult youth in a supportive, non-threatening manner; Able to respond quickly and safely and is a settling influence in crisis situations and emergencies
Ability to work with people of varied cultural backgrounds and tolerate differences in behavior.
Support equal and fair treatment and opportunity for all; tolerant of people and processes.
Ability to work independently, using good judgment, and common sense
Able to make good decisions consistently based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment.

Willingness and ability to work outside of normal business hours, and Holidays and/or weekends as needed.
Able to physically accommodate a wide range of strenuous physical activity, including but not limited to walking long distances, moving up and down stairs, lift bags/boxes up to 50 pounds, drive a minivan and physically manage youth if needed
Possess (or able to attain) a current state of Alaska Driving License
Have a clean driving record
Pass federal, state and local background investigation
