Aldersgate United Methodist Church is seeking an Administrator to oversee Aurora Lights Childcare Center (ALCC). ALCC is a play-based center with a family-oriented atmosphere, focused on social-emotional skills, placing a high value on love of outdoors and the arts. It is the mission of the Aurora Lights Childcare Center to provide quality child care for all families in the community in a nurturing, love, and educational environment.

Administrator Job Description

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

● Be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

● Pass a criminal background check.

● Must have at least 12 semester hours of college credit in early childhood development, child development, child psychology, or the equivalent, or must hold either a current child development associate (CDA) credential from the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition or a Montessori certificate issued by a program accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Commission for Teacher Education. College credit in management may substitute for three of the 12 required hours.

● Have the equivalent credentials of at least a Level 06 Certificate on the Alaska SEED Career Ladder (Current CDA

OR 6 SEED EC related field credits OR Alaska Early Childhood Family Child Care Credential). Ability to obtain a

Level 07 Certificate/CDA credential within six months of hire.

● Participate in continuing education by obtaining at least three semester hours of college credit in courses relevant to child care and development every two years. If the administrator has a BA early childhood education, continuing education credits will be required every three years.

● Supply four references with names, phone numbers, email and mailing address, at least three of whom are not related to the applicant. References should be able to attest to the designated Administrator’s good character, reputation, interpersonal skills and, if possible, professional skills.

● Have management and supervisory skills necessary to handle finances, plan and evaluate programs, and select and supervise personnel, including delegation of responsibility and motivation of staff.

● CPR and 1st Aid, Health and Safety 6 hour, and Alaska Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter trainings required within two months of hire and to be kept current throughout employment.

● Be able to obtain a Food Handlers Permit with 30 days of hire.

● Have knowledge of basic child care and feeding, as well as an understanding of infant and child development.

● Have strong public relations and communication skills to work with children, family members, and other Center employees. Coordinate with parents to obtain current contact information.

● Have the ability to move and react quickly to a variety of circumstances.

● Have the ability to be patient with children, talk so kids will listen, and listen so kids will talk.

● Have the skills necessary to handle finances, budgets and plan and evaluate programs.

● Have basic computer skills, including email and document creation. Ability to obtain proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google docs programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● Support, encourage, and require all staff achieve the education goals needed to earn and maintain (at minimum) a Learn and Grow Level II (Two) status in Alaska’s Quality Recognition and Improvement System (QRIS) as a

Center.

● Ability to perform any of the requirements, duties and responsibilities listed on the current Childcare Associate and Caregiver job descriptions.

● Provide regular reports to ALCC Board Members.

● Assist and care for others – Provide personal assistance, medical attention, emotions support, or other personal care to children, their families and other Center employees. Dress children and change diapers.

● Safe environment – Maintain a safe play environment. Supervise and assist staff to sanitize toys and sleeping mats weekly. Must do a daily inspection of the toys, furniture, and other equipment, inside and outside the

Center, for loose or broken parts or any other hazard to the children that may have developed.

● Think creatively – Collaborate with staff to develop, design, or create new developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive experiences and academic and life skills learning for the children.

● Make decisions and solve problems – Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

● Organize, plan, and prioritize work – Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish the work. Must help set up a system for monitoring child performance. Maintain office files on children and employees. Must designate a temporary administrator whenever absent from the Center during business hours.

● Resolve conflicts and negotiate with others – Handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts.

● Schedule work and activities – Schedule staff and daily activities for the children.

● Guidance of subordinates – Provide guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.

● Determine compliance with State regulations – Must be familiar with the Alaska State regulations regarding out- of-home care for children in a facility and make sure the Center stays in compliance.

● Supplies – Must make sure that all supplies necessary for the running of the Center are on site at all time. These supplies may include, paper towels, toilet paper, diapering supplies, cleaning supplies, office supplies, toys and equipment for play, books, arts and crafts supplies, non-perishable snacks, etc.

● Education – Keep up-to-date on current developmentally appropriate practices and research and participate in continuing education classes, webinars and AEYC conferences. Must identify and provide appropriate training opportunities for staff development.

● Early Childhood Education advocacy – Keep up-to-date on current legislation and funding opportunities at the local, state and federal levels. Maintain contact with other local and state childcare Directors, local, state and federal representatives, AEYC-SEA staff and THREAD staff. Educate and encourage advocacy in ALCC families, Aldersgate United Methodist Church (AUMC) members, other childcare Directors, and the public about legislation, funding, and regulation changes that affect early childhood education.

COVID-19 Mitigation:

Child drop-off occurs outdoors with masks on. All children and staff wash hands, do a temperature check, and switch to indoor shoes upon entering. Masks encouraged during small group activities for children ages 2 years and up. High touch surfaces disinfected hourly, rooms in between separate group use, and toys at end of day. Currently, Juneau has a 90 day mandate for mask use in indoor public spaces including staff at childcare centers (some exceptions outlined in the mandate).
