Summary : The Director of People and Culture is responsible for strategic approaches for all human resource functions, including organizational development, performance management, staff engagement, compensation, benefits, employee relations, recruiting/retention, staff policies, and compliance with all federal, state, and local laws. Additionally, this person will serve as the organizational lead for all diversity initiatives with a focus on enhancing the experience of all staff. Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and ten years experience in a similar field with a minimum of five years of supervisory experience or the equivalent. Experience in non-profit organizations preferred. Experience with diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEAI) roles preferred. PHR/SPHR certification preferred. Essential Duties:

Leads the development and execution of all people-related initiatives in the strategic plan and annual plan. Uses results of staff surveys, exit interviews, and stay interviews, to propose new strategic initiatives.

Leads organizational efforts to promote diversity, equity, access, and inclusion. Specifically, serves as the staff liaison to the Diversity Committee of the Board of Directors and as the champion for the DEAI Staff Council.

Oversees performance management activities including ongoing feedback, documentation of performance issues, annual performance evaluations, and performance improvement plans. Provides supervisors and staff members with coaching and resources to help resolve and prevent interpersonal and team conflicts, adapt to different leadership styles, and improve team performance.

Proactively engages staff to improve working relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention. Communicates openly and frequently, keeping staff informed on benefit resources, organizational events, and other pertinent information.

Supports the senior management team in the annual personnel budgeting process, to include promotion and compensation review.

Plans and implements an annual staff training calendar for all levels of staff designed to meet the current year’s strategic objectives.

Supervises personnel matters within the Human Resources (HR) Department. Assigns and checks work, establishes schedules, sets deadlines, and delegates authority. Sets performance standards for staff. Prepares annual performance evaluations. Makes personnel-related recommendations to the President and CEO.

Directs the staff recruiting process, including personnel requisition development, job description, and posting development, placing ads, applicant correspondence, interviews, reference checks, preparation for visa documentation, as needed, and onboarding processes.

Directs the out-processing of exiting staff, including exit paperwork, exit interviews, and out-processing procedures.

Ensures that employee benefit plans (i.e., medical, dental, vision, 401K retirement plan, EAP, worker’s compensation insurance, and other insurance plans) are appropriately administered according to plan documents, federal regulations, and Center policies.

Assures accuracy and compliance with all state, federal, and local regulatory requirements regarding employment, pay, garnishments, benefits, and compensation.

Maintains the Center’s policies and procedures relating to Human Resources and ensures they are accurate, current, and in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Reviews and updates policies as laws and industry trends change. Ensures written policies support the culture desired at the Center.

Ensures that the human resource information system meets the organization’s personnel information needs.

Ensures that high quality HR services are being provided to fiscal agent clients of the Alaska SeaLife Center, including the North Pacific Research Board and the Alaska Ocean Observation System.

Ensures proper control and administration of all assigned resources, including annual budget allocations, capital improvements, fixed assets, equipment, supplies, and purchasing authorities. Maintains cost-effective oversight of expenditures.

Maintains official ASLC records under the current Records Retention Policy and Schedule.

Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, goodwill, cooperation, and high service standards.

Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
