The primary responsibility for this employee is to organize and direct operations in Bethel, AK which requires cargo and general port operations management. This position will also work with the company’s administrative assistant in Anchorage to track cargo and organize such items as manifests, wharfage, moorage, and other port activity. The secondary responsibility for the Port Operations Manager is to support the operational requirements of the tugboats and barges in Bethel, as well as the Unalaq landing craft or other Bowhead Transport vessels while are in Bethel, working with the crew to facilitate fuel, water, stores, and organizing/staging various other parts and supplies to be made available while the Tug / Barges and Unalaq or other vessels are in port. In conclusion, the positon Port Operations Manager in Bethel is a vital component of Bowhead Transport, and key to its success. Personal attributes that highlight a successful Port Operational Manager are organizational skills, self-reliance, and professionalism with an emphasis on safety. Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise: Imperative to this leadership position, the successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills, effective written and verbal communication skills and a positive management style that builds trust with clients and motivates staff. Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and common used marketing software. Demonstrate ability to work under pressure, identify and prioritize critical issues and effectively identify solutions for mutual benefit of all stakeholders. Attendance, punctuality and reliability, and are essential traits required for this position. Candidate must demonstrate knowledge, appreciation and sensitivity to Alaska Native cultures especially the Iñupiat culture. Ability to champion professional and technical development of local resources in ethnically diverse and logistically challenged regions urban and rural is required. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, and coordination of people and resources. A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Marine Project Management or other relevant field. Comparable experience may be substituted for the education requirement. A minimum of 5 years experience working directly with customers including sales experience. Experience running a variety of equipment including but not limited to loaders, forklift, dump truck, excavator, etc. Experience with conventional and unconventional commercial projects. Experience with commercial operations and maintenance. Experience in planning and overseeing vessel construction is a plus. Knowledge of all USCG, ABS and other marine related vessel / operational requirements Experience with engineering, consulting, and / or construction management is a plus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must demonstrate the ability to determine cargo rates and estimate associated expenses, (Working with Bowhead Transport sales and management) Must demonstrate ability to strike the balance between business goals and cultural values. Job requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to form and maintain numerous professional relationships. Field opps in a variety of ocean shoreline, river shoreline and rural community locations.
