Job Purpose or Summary:

Serves as a technician to forestry research scientists at a Research Station in Flagstaff, AZ. The program collects, processes, analyzes, evaluates, and publishes comprehensive information on forest and other related renewable resources. The program is charged with conducting a nationally consistent, strategic annual forest inventory of the United States and its territories. Annual inventory results are widely used by public agencies, private companies, and organizations to make informed natural resource decisions and policies.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Works with a team of technicians and professionals, collecting forestry and forest health monitoring data on permanently established fixed radius plots. Assists in locating field sites using aerial photographs and topographic maps. Collects forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements according to nationally standardized protocol and field procedures.

The incumbent obtains data on tree growth and mortality; forest type, stand size and stand age; anthropogenic treatments and/or natural disturbances; insects and disease; soil attributes; and understory vegetation composition. Assists in field manual interpretation when assessing complex or unusual situations. Uses botanical keys to identify plants encountered and assists in the collection and preservation of specimens.

Records all measurements utilizing a personal data recorder. Uploads and edits data on a daily basis. Completes accurate and concise plot summaries of all field visits. Actively participates in the safety program, assisting In identifying hazards and mitigating actions.

Incumbent must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

Physical Demands:

Duties involve rigorous field work requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, recurring bending, climbing, lifting, and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds, and similar strenuous activities. Work is physically demanding, requiring the ability to perform effectively in steep, debris and brush-covered terrain under adverse ground and weather conditions for long periods of time.

Work Environment:

Field sites are generally in remote locations and may be located significant distances from roads or trails. Work in the forest environment is in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, and covered with vegetation. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include snake or insect bites and stings, contact with animals or poisonous plants, etc. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. Work requires use of boots, gloves, goggles, and hardhat; other safety equipment may be required. Some Travel may be required.
