Our data centers are the foundation of American Express’ technology platforms, a critical component in providing continual services to our customers while protecting their most confidential and personal information. DCI is a component of the Global Infrastructure (GI) organization. GI is comprised of Mainframe and Data Center Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering & Operations, Core Infrastructure Engineering, Data Services, Global Technology Operations, IT Service Management & Risk, and Program Management. Here’s just some of what you’ll do: Contribute to the analysis of business, application, and infrastructure requirements. Design, build, enhance, and integrate the critical systems infrastructure required to support global technology infrastructure. Participate in bringing consistent approach to capacity monitoring, availability assessment, maintenance plans, remediation activity, and capital project execution.We are looking for an individual to lead our Data Center Operations, Maintenance and Critical Systems capability responsible for the IPC1 data center, joining the DCI leadership team focused on ensuring operational stability in this Core Data Center.The DCI Operations team is responsible for 24/7 monitoring of all facility critical support infrastructure, life safety, and ancillary systems. This role is responsible for all facets of basic to intermediate maintenance of data center critical infrastructure, which includes but is not limited to routine corrective and preventive maintenance, trouble shooting and repairs. Additionally, vendor planning, scheduling, communication, and coordination (internal and external) are led by this position. The successful candidate applies technical knowledge to solve problems. Day-to-day work activities require an understanding of the interrelationships between various mission critical facility systems and close partnership with technology service delivery team.The candidate will have the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art facility where they will be included in plan and procedure development. The candidate will need to support mission critical facility roles such as mechanical, electrical, and building management systems maintenance. This position escalates operational availability risks to leadership.ResponsibilitiesIn this role you will be specifically responsible for:Maintain 100% availability of the data center MEP infrastructure and ancillary systems
Ensure elite building operations and maintenance, event response, space planning and infrastructure delivery in support of data processing and network operations in Phoenix
Lead and control data center operations and services costs
Ensure the correct level of resilient facility infrastructure is being provided for critical spaces related to Technology strategic and tactical needs
Closely collaborate with strategic business partners, internal customers, and vendors to deploy the most appropriate critical space, power, cooling and cabling necessary to support data processing and network infrastructure operations
Optimize data center and critical space plans providing recommendations on invest, disinvest, risk, corrective actions and growth opportunities as required
Develop, review, maintain and carry out DCI global processes and standards related to critical environment governance
Critical MEP systems maintenance and performance testing (power and cooling distribution systems, power generation, battery back-up systems, fire protection and suppression, building and system controls and automation, security systems)
Coordinate placement and site preparation for new IT deployments
Be responsible for IT power distribution and rack power installations and rack and stack of new IT hardware
7X24 MEP monitoring, adjustment, calibration, and corrective action response
Compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements and reporting
Ensure an appropriate, safe, and healthy working environment is maintained for all residents and visitors
Fire/life/safety process, procedures, and controls including ensuring all local, state, and federal code requirements related to health, safety and building occupancy are maintained
QualificationsQualified applicants are likely to possess the following background and qualifications:Consistent track record of integrating with Global Real Estate, Global Security Ops, and technology organizations
Background in DC MEP infrastructure, with engineering focus and Tier III/IV data center environment experience
Engages and collaborates with external support authorities and assists with resolution
Complete frequency-based infrastructure maintenance tasks on complex data center infrastructure
Ability to escalate operational risks to data center infrastructure leadership
Comprehensive base building and critical spaces SME level knowledge of Data Center centric facility infrastructure
Exhibits basic level skills and knowledge of building systems and equipment beyond their primary role
Demonstrable ability to analyze MEP configurations, key attributes and identify lurking vulnerabilities and opportunities to improve site viability, reliability and efficiency while ensuring compliance with AXP standards and jurisdictional requirements
Deep understanding of fault tolerance and concurrent maintainability definitions and principles
Pragmatic in stabilizing multiple conflicting demands: Looks across portfolio and interpersonal boundaries in finding opportunities, gaps, alignments and value oriented solutions
Ability to convey complex technical information to lay audiences
Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 process and Quality Management Systems
Understands the DCI Global Governance Model and operating principles
Leadership experience in handling multiple, large, multi-functional teams or projects
Proficient at developing and presenting ideas and moving them beyond the conceptual realm
Requires financial competence in terms of monitoring, controlling and reporting budget expenditure
Ability to lead complex interaction with leadership-level personnel outside of the organization
Demonstrable ability to effectively resolve conflict
Deep understanding of the roles and functions that span the Service Delivery organization
Comprehensive knowledge of Technology and operational understanding for business area supported
Ability to influence management matrix in order to achieve outcomes without direct responsibility
Knowledge of multiple business and enterprise service environments, covering a large variety of business functions and capabilities
Exhibits good time management skills and neatness
The ability to work safely where hazardous voltages and machinery are present
Experience managing and working with culturally diverse and/or geographically distributed teams
Developed strategic solutions meeting or exceeding pre-defined quality requirements and falling within budgetary and quality parameters
Conceived, initiated, and led projects with widespread impact on infrastructure design, innovation, and implementation.
Set standards for engineering design and established standard methodologies in operations, driving continual process improvement.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to create and deliver senior management messages
Experience defining and implementing operational metrics; facilitate a data-driven decision-making environment
Ability to think creatively while maintaining focus on practicality
Demonstrated ability to write and perform preventative maintenance activities
Ability to write and update field reports
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (2007 or higher) desktop applications
Displays a willingness to cross-train on other data center systems
Active in industry forums and standard/guideline setting organizations
Other RequirementsMinimum of 10 years’ experience with large-scale DC operations or large-scale compute facilities
Experience in data center management and implementation within a large-scale environment
Leadership experience in leading large multi-functional teams and the flexibility to influence people at a variety of levels internally and externally
Extensive professional experience in a global organization, with a successful track record in leading organizations and influencing people with an emphasis on teamwork
