Animal Shelter Staff - ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST

Arizona, Phoenix 00000 Phoenix USA

Vacancy expired!

PLEASE READ FULL POSTING BEFORE APPLYING

Shout out to all the animal lovers and fitness enthusiasts from Sun Valley Animal Shelter. We are a fast paced, ever growing non-profit, no-kill animal shelter in Glendale, Arizona and we're looking for an exceptional person to be part of our team full time. Professional experience of dog/cat handling, knowledge of breeds, behavior and positive reinforcement training is a huge plus, but not required. Being bilingual is also a plus and much appreciated.

The ideal candidate would not only have a passion for animals but for fitness, loves a workout and is not afraid to sweat or get dirty. If you are the type of person who counts your daily steps, keeps track of your heart-rate, looking to burn some extra calories, build muscle or is always looking for an extra workout, this might be the perfect position for you. Your daily schedule is from 7:30 am to 4 pm; it is about 4 hours of disinfecting/cleaning kennels in the warm Arizona morning, followed by hot afternoons of exercising, socializing, de-stressing shelter pets and meeting with potential adopters. Closing up includes feeding dinner and a final spot clean for the night as shelter pets deserve to sleep in clean kennels. Their health is our priority, so paying close attention to detail is a must.

It is extremely rewarding to help homeless pets grow, regain their health, watch them bloom and help find their awesome new families but it’s not always unicorns and rainbows. On the flip side, it's a lot of messes, a ton of work and sometimes having to be part of some sad situations. You'll be expected to be on your feet most of the day, to work rain or shine, to be proactive, self-motivated and understand that no two days are alike.

Duties of an Animal Care Specialist:

Ensure the safety and health of all of the shelter pets in our care

Manage/assist dog/cat socializing groups – group sizes range from 5 to 15 shelter pets @ a time

Daily kennel cleaning –messes of all kinds, facility upkeep, some maintenance and yard clean up

Pay close attention to detail while preparing meals, feeding, and administering medication

Some basic grooming – baths, brush out, ear/eye cleaning, nail trims

Qualifications:

A caring personality with love or general happiness around dogs/cats of all sizes

Willing to get down and dirty – properly disinfecting/cleaning is a huge part of the job

Excellent communication skills and can take direction, both verbal and written

Works well as a team and independently, always a go-getter, likes to stay busy

Excellent customer service skills – Adoptions and matchmaking to the right home is our main goal

A desire to learn about dogs/cats and their behavior, helping them overcome and grow during their stay

Able to lift 50lbs, constantly bend down and be on your feet for most of the day

Ability to work weekends and holidays - shelter pets need to eat and deserve a clean living space

Excellent attendance – the shelter pets and your team depend on you

Are 18+ years old and MUST HAVE your own transportation that can reliably get to our facility on a daily

basis. We are in an industrial area that has no bus routes close by.

Please understand many candidates are interested in being part of our team and share the outlook of bringing positive energy to the world. We are being selective, looking for the right candidate who understands balance, patience and who doesn’t let outside influences effect their overall energy. As it’s very important when working with shelter pets, to have a positive outlook and help bring happiness to their daily lives. We are all they currently have, we are their temporary family and home. We need to make sure they have as much fun as possible during their stay.

Some questions to include in your cover letter:

Explain what breed of dog or cat you're most like and why?

Your current furry, feathery or reptilian family members and what you admire most about them?

Any scheduling restrictions you may have and why?

Any previous experience or current association with any other rescue groups? (not required, ok if you don’t)

Full time position, set schedule, no health benefits, 90 day probation period, $12.00/hr

Please email your cover letter and resume or visit us to drop it off in person.

We look forward to hearing/meeting you and please know we send positive energy your way.
