Provide recovery support services in various settings to peers within the community to support, educate and provide services to advance recovery and wellness.

Peer Support Specialist Position overview statement:

Peer Support Specialist is a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a peer advocate, supporter, providing peers information and peer support for people in outpatient and inpatient settings.

Assist peers of all ages, from young adult to old age, in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process.

Have understanding on how the services they provide impact recovery and assists a peer to advance and self-manage their recovery.

Does document the value of the services provided to provide evidence of outcomes in recovery.

Performs in a wide range of settings, including a medical center; in peer’s or family homes; in community-based outpatient settings, community agencies; or in transport vehicles (public or government), in psychiatric hospitals, in community settings like stores, food banks, etc., as well as a wellness center.

May demonstrate varying levels of recovery and symptoms.

Ability to:

Provide quality services without judgment or personal agenda.

Model recovery and set appropriate boundaries.

Identify a peer’s unique strengths and pathway to recovery.

Assist:

In teaching and role modeling the value of every individual’s recovery experience.

Peers in articulating personal goals for recovery through the use of one-to-one and group sessions and during these sessions support peers in identifying and creating goals and developing wellness plans with the skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid them in achieving those goals.

Peers in setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups, as well as means of locating and joining existing groups in wellness center, the community and clinics.

Peers in working with their case manager or treatment team in determining the steps he/she needs to take in order to achieve these goals and self-directed recovery

Peers in building social skills among peers to build a support network, in the community to increase a support system and build citizenship and skills that will enhance job acquisition and tenure.

Peers in developing empowerment skills and combating stigma through self-advocacy. This will be accomplished through regular meetings, individual or group sessions. Through the use of role playing/modeling techniques the PN provides opportunities for others to show/demonstrate how they have handled similar problems, how to present themselves in certain situations, or how to handle problems that may arise in interactions with others.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience:

Clear a background check and be free of major criminal offenses.

A current and valid Arizona driver’s license with a 60 month clear MVR.

If in recovery, must be stable for over one year.

Pass a drug test.

Verified legal status to work in the United States.

HS diploma or GED

TB free

CPR/1st Aid a plus.
