Job Description

The Ratings and Underwriting team assesses and manages potential chargeback risk for the largest sellers processing on Square, and assists in the onboarding of new accounts in partnership with our sales team. We promote the growth of our sellers through a combination of in-depth financial analysis, understanding of business models, novel risk tools and approaches, and principled risk-taking.

We are looking for an Underwriting Manager to support our growing seller base by leading a team of experienced Underwriters responsible for reviewing high-value merchant accounts. In their roles, they will conduct merchant due diligence calls, partner with enablement teams such as Sales and Account Management, and propose tailored solutions which ensure growth while mitigating risk. As a leader within Credit Risk, you will set goals and effect change in your team, drafting procedures to manage large-seller risk, and advocating for our culture of seller enablement and Economic Empowerment. You will bring excellent commercial credit skills and a background in leading motivated teams. The ideal candidate will also be critical thinkers - and be willing to use their skills to find unique solutions to enablegrowth, provide differentiatedexperiences, and manage loss.

  • Oversee a team of Underwriters responsible for managing risk in our large seller base
  • Manage their team to ensure that operational and loss performance goals are met
  • Approve credit requests and escalations
  • Create frameworks and procedures to manage risk
  • Inform product and feature requirements for new risk tools
  • Identify portfolio and seller trends to inform and prioritize new policy creation
  • Determine and report on essential metrics
  • Create processes and reporting to systematically manage seller and portfolio risk
  • Partner with teams to serve as an expert on credit risk

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in commercial banking, credit, or payment industries and managing a team
  • Underwriting and financial statement analysis skills
  • Comfort with diverse risk management tools and techniques
  • Able to easily communicate credit principles, and build partnerships
  • BA/BS in a related field
