State Farm is seeking an experienced Data Scientist with a passion for mentoring others to serve as the primary technical lead of the Modeling & Graduate Network (MAGNet) internship program, a primary pipeline for data science talent at State Farm. The individual selected for this role will have the chance to expand both their technical & leadership skills by overseeing the day-to-day operation of a new MAGNet program launching in August 2023 in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU). The key responsibilities of this individual are hiring & developing graduate students working as year-round, State Farm MAGNet interns.

These interns are tasked with solving applied data science problems at State Farm. In addition, the MAGNet lead will work closely with the MAGNet programs at other locations to source & scope project work for the MAGNet interns and will serve as State Farm's liaison between its data science community & the partnering graduate programs at Arizona State University.

Outside of the responsibilities of the MAGNet operation, the individual selected for this role will contribute to the development of AI/ML educational materials, intended for a variety of internal audiences. This is a full-time role with a Hybrid working arrangement based out of State Farm's Marina Heights hub in Tempe, AZ.

Qualifications

  • Completed

    Masters, other advanced degrees, in an analytical field such as statistics, economics, data science, mathematics, quantitative marketing, operations research, etc.
  • A minimum of 4 years of applied experience developing predictive models in an industry setting
  • Experience with gathering and interpreting business requirements to design and create scalable data science solutions in a regulatory environment (including, but not limited to, insurance, healthcare, and finance).
  • Experience serving as mentor/coach of junior data scientists and/or interns is strongly preferred
  • Experience managing multiple technical projects simultaneously
  • Broad experience with a variety of advanced modeling techniques: generalized linear & non-linear modeling, survival analysis, clustering, time series, tree-based algorithms, and/or neural networks.
  • Familiarity with concepts related to the design of experiments & the analysis of unstructured data
  • Programming experience with Python, R and/or SAS
  • Familiarity with cloud-based environments (e.g., AWS)
  • Demonstrated ability to convey complex subject matter to a variety of audiences
