Position: Certified Veterinary Technician

Salary: Hourly

Reports To: Operations Supervisor, Amber Nix

Position Summary: Veterinary Technicians will be proficient in all Veterinary Assistant Duties and Responsibilities, and will further assist the Shelter Veterinarian and work in conjunction with Veterinary Assistants to ensure the health and well-being of the shelter felines, including medication, intake of new felines, and daily rounds of felines currently in our care.

Willingness to participate in meetings and share ideas and suggestions to improve feline medical care or the organization as a whole

Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop in-depth knowledge regarding each Hermitage cat’s unique behavior and needs.

Adhere in fear-free cat handling & restraint.

Make changes to the Hermitage Wet Food Feeding Guide & Individual Feeding List as required.

Administer Rabies Vaccines under the supervision of the Shelter DVM.

Use Plumb’s, or another appropriate resource, to calculate doses for all drugs used by Hermitage Medical.

Monitor the use, storage, and recordkeeping of controlled drugs.

Administer euthanasia as instructed by the Shelter Veterinarian

Give direction to VA’s carrying out prescribed diagnostics and treatments, and provide Shelter DVM with initial diagnostic impressions.

Ensure all Hermitage Medical equipment is in working condition, and perform routine maintenance & upkeep on said equipment.

Create, implement, and update all Hermitage Medical protocols, and verify strict compliance.

Determine when a Hermitage cat requires off-site treatment, and arrange for transportation to/from the off-site facility.

Train VAs, facilitating and supporting their continued job growth.

Use appropriate medical record notation, and review Hermitage medical files to make certain each and every one is accurate and up-to-date.

Immediately prior to adoption, verify cat is medically sound for adoption.

Aid Shelter DVM in every aspect of surgery, including, but not limited to, calculation of drug doses, preparation of surgical suite & patient, sedation, induction, intubation, anesthesia monitoring & maintenance, and recovery.

Oversee Hermitage’s student extern program by interviewing, scheduling, teaching, and evaluating all externs, while reporting their ongoing progress to the appropriate school officials.

Coordinate educational experiences here at the Hermitage via Medical tours, class visits, job shadowing, and biweekly socialization classes.

Complete monthly inventory count on all Shelter food, Medical supplies, and L4L/Employee expenditures & reimbursements.

Maintain various vendor accounts and order items as needed, ensuring adequate stock is available at all times.

Proactive role in developing new skills and furthering knowledge base by attending CE.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Educational Background

Valid Arizona driver’s license

Veterinary Technician Degree

License Veterinary Technician Certification
