Job Description

Reporting to the Vice President, Scientific Strategy, incumbent will take a key role in supporting the scientific strategy underlying the Exelixis discovery pipeline. An early responsibility for this position includes creating a searchable internal database to then acquire, store, and organize internal and external tumor genomics, RNA sequencing, Proteomics, and neo-antigen data. The successful candidate will serve a key leadership role by working with the Biology team to query the database and create testable therapeutic hypotheses for wet lab validation. Further, the position entails processing of internal data generated with our proprietary compounds. The goal is to uncover novel drug mechanisms of action and identify patient selection strategies to support clinical development.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Data acquisition and data quality management for RNA-seq, ATAC-seq and related methodologies. Management of robust and secure cloud computing infrastructure. Statistical analysis, for example, to correlate patient subgroups with target expression or to identify key pathways regulated by Exelixis’ proprietary compounds. Create novel computational approaches and analytical tools as required by research goals. Analyze large molecular datasets such as raw microarray data, genomic sequence data, and proteomics data for clinical or basic research purposes. Design and apply bioinformatics algorithms including unsupervised and supervised machine learning, dynamic programming, or graphic algorithms. Test new and updated bioinformatics tools and software. Lead responsibility for surveying and synthesizing scientific and competitive data to further develop an innovative scientific strategy for Exelixis discovery and partnering activities. Stay abreast of developments in the external scientific community through networking activities, including representing the company at industry scientific and business conferences. Define and grow areas of strategic focus in alignment with the company objectives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Education: Ph.D. in molecular/cellular biology or related discipline and eight years of related experience.

Experience: Experience successfully managing bioinformatics projects in a biotech or academic environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Highly developed scientific analytical skills, able to critically assess, integrate and synthesize broad areas of scientific research from diverse sources to develop specific recommendations. A “differentiated” thinker with an ability to think beyond dogma. Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and on cross-functional teams. Ability to use broad expertise and to develop scientific strategies, company objectives and principles, and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways. Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with key external stakeholders and potential stakeholders. Strong interpersonal, influencing, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with biologists at Exelixis.

JOB COMPLEXITY: Complex, involving critical input into decisions that can profoundly impact the company. Works on extremely complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables. Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
