Employees at correctional facilities perform correctional work regardless of their specific occupation.ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent supervises daily over sight and assists with plans for many of the long-range operations of the recycling operation within the guidelines of the provisions and requirements of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), and UNICOR. The incumbent makes decisions affecting a workload which is subject to frequent changes. Inmates disassemble materials into component parts for sorting, collection, and possible further formatting. Items such as terminals, CRTs, and keyboards are sorted, tested, and collected for reuse sale. Others are further disassembled and sorted into various components and parts, such as floppy disks and diskette readers, motherboards, computer cards, and batteries for resale or reuse. Various metal and plastic components are disassembled into various residual material types for sale as scrap plastic, ferrous and non-ferrous metal. Other post-consumer goods are collected and sorted. The production schedule, flow, and labor usage will be redirected to meet current sales needs. This requires interaction among work groups to move components to the appropriate sale prepping locations. The incumbent redirects resources to insure operations meets the changing schedule.Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. Education As a general rule, education is not credible above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.OR Experience You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.Some examples of this qualifying experience are:GL-08: Experience which demonstrates knowledge of recycling principles, concepts and methods and performing a variety of duties involving coordination, monitoring, or oversight of recycling programs, projects or activities.Experience in training others on various recycling methods and associated equipment.Experience in operating a tractor trailer truck to retrieve and deliver items from a warehouse.Experience in preparing reports regarding organizational operations, internal controls and purchasing. GL-09: Experience which demonstrates knowledge of recycling principles, concepts and methods and performing a variety of duties involving coordination, monitoring, oversight or evaluation of recycling programs, projects or activities.Experience in developing and implementing processes to test, dissemble, and sell electronic and computer equipment for recycling.Experience in supervising and training others on various recycling methods and associated equipment.Experience in preparing reports regarding recycling management, operations, and budgeting and purchasing within an industrial setting. Special Conditions of Employment Section:Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks. All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score.
