ABOUT THIS ROLEAs a Software Development Manager (SDM) you will oversee development efforts and architectural designs, guide project vision, be a product owner for development projects, and hire and develop engineering talent. In this role, you will manage a team to design, develop, test, and deploy massively scalable creator tools and services. You will work closely with product managers, engineering leaders, and leadership across the company to develop a roadmap and feature set to deliver the best possible customer experience.

ABOUT THE TEAMThe LA-based tech teams will work adjacent to Audible Studios, where our content teams work with a diverse range of talent to create Audible Original Content.

On Audible's newly founded Creator Marketplace team, our customers are talented storytellers, voice actors, producers and other creators. We build innovative tools for Content Creators that are valuable, easy to use and most importantly ensure their success with customers, allowing them to focus on what they do best, while we help to bring their art to millions of customers. As a Director of Software Development, you will
  • Complete the software development lifecycle: defining, prioritizing, designing, and leading implementation and testing of new features within an Agile environment.
  • Handle all aspects of software development, including all operational metrics and support for your team's software.
  • Define, manage, and improve the software and product development processes by working closely with high-performance engineers.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team and ensure project plans and delivery commitments are met.
  • Coach and mentor our high-performing architects and engineers to help them grow their skills, enhance their knowledge of our systems and their ability to get things done, while enabling them to be future leaders who are focused on building a high growth and inclusive culture.
  • Architect and develop the innovative technical design and implementation approach with the overall product line goals and objectives in mind.
  • Own your team's operational excellence, including creation of and monitoring of metrics and alarms in a continuous process improvement environment.
  • Be a passionate builder of talent and teams. You will hire, coach, and mentor engineers on the team.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • 7+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams
  • Experience partnering with product OR program management teams
  • 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
  • 3+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
  • 3+ years of experience leading architects and full stack development teams that support consumer-facing global web solutions.
  • 3+ years of experience developing and deploying distributed, low latency, and high availability solutions.
  • 3+ years of experience managing agile software projects across multiple and geographically distributed teams.
  • Experience delivering customer-driven software products at a high scale in a fast paced, technology first, rapid-growth company.
  • Prior experience as a software engineer who strategically influenced the direction of the product design and development.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with large scale, consumer facing, enterprise level applications.
  • Ability to affect positive change, empower people, cultivate product technology visions and innovative solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information and negotiate tradeoffs with a variety of audiences.
  • Experienced decision maker with the ability to articulate product vision and roadmap.
  • Prior experience as a software engineer, subject matter expert, and strategic influencer on the direction of the product design and development.
  • 5+ years of software development experience in object-oriented design, coding and highly scalable, available and low latency web technologies.
  • Experienced with building and architecting on AWS.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, motivate and retain high-performance engineering teams while leading engineering culture change.
  • Prior use of AWS or other enterprise cloud technologies at scale in a production environment.
  • Working experience with java, microservices, CI/CD, and cross-platform development.
  • Experienced pragmatic decision maker and driver with the ability to articulate product vision and roadmap.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively across teams & multiple division stakeholders.
