Salary Range: $2,612.80 - $5,245.60 Biweekly

Final Filing Date: 07/08/2022 Based in the PHS Information Technology Unit, this full-time, career position will partner with the IS Manager and provide highly-skilled, complex administration of critical Linux and Windows server systems that power the research, administrative and teaching activities in the Department. These systems include storage systems, secure Web-based application servers, firewall systems, network switches, high-performance computing clusters, Windows Active Directory, VPN systems, and Web content servers. The position will be tasked with developing and managing the full life-cycle of server implementation and maintenance including scoping of needs, equipment specifications, unboxing, racking, cabling, and installation of server OS and associated software stacks in a data center setting. An important component to this administration role will be partnering with the IS Manager to monitor critical services and associated remediation of services if they become unavailable. The incumbent must possess excellent team working skills, as well as able to work independently, utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to independently remediate server infrastructure problems as required. The position will partner with the IS Manager in the development, maintenance and implementation of server configuration management processes using Puppet, managing manifests and modules as needed. The incumbent will work with AWS buckets for data storage, NAS systems, MySQL/MariaDB databases, Hypervisor platforms, various Web server technologies, multi-tiered topologies, and will be comfortable scripting maintenance processes as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • California Driver’s license
  • Demonstrated 5+ years high-level Linux server admin experience. Gather requirements for system use, scope plan for installation, management, and hardware installation, as well as operating system and associated software stacks.
  • Demonstrated experience in server system monitoring and service incident remediation for Windows and Linux systems using well-formed methods, such as incident tracking, system incident logging, system incident analysis and system process improvement during remediation.
  • Demonstrated experience with software stacks, not limited to: Apache, MySQL/MariaDB, PHP, HPC systems, such as OpenHPC, Ubuntu, or similar; SLURM, CUDA,Server statistical programs/systems such as R, SAS, Jupyter Notebook, RStudio, SASStudio
  • Demonstrated experience with the following server operating systems: Ubuntu Server, CentOS Server/Rocky Linux, Windows Server 2012r2, 2016, 2019
Demonstrated experience with Windows Active Directory, Windows AD DNS, Group Policy, Windows LDAPS.
  • Demonstrated experience with IP networking, VLANs, LAN architectures, VPN technologies, SSL/TLS, server firewalling such as PF, IPTables, UFW, Windows Firewall.
  • Demonstrated experience working with high performance hypervisor platforms, such as Proxmox and VMWARE.
  • Demonstrated experience working with equipment in a data center setting, cabling, PDUs, UPS systems, and remote management via BMC/IPMI/iDRAC.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing configuration management tools such as Puppet, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience with application security, platform hardening against intrusions, vulnerability assessment, and threat modeling/source code analysis techniques highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in infrastructure architecture for scalable, highly available – with hands-on experience in fault-tolerant and load balancing – server clusters, multi-tier web-based systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with shell scripting, process automation, reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience with server log offloading to SIEM or rsyslog for analysis.
  • Demonstrated skills to plan, design, write, edit, maintain, use, and teach complex technical documentation and instructions for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated excellent skills to perform document and manage problem resolution, escalation and notification policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Industry certifications attesting to skills in systems administration and security.
  • Resourceful, problem solver, and show willingness and self-starting attitude to learn and keep abreast with new and changing technologies.
  • Ability to complete full life cycle of server infrastructure equipment, from unboxing, racking, cabling, installation of OS, and set up of complex software stacks depending on the needs.

Special Requirements
  • Physically able to lift boxes (up to 50 pounds) and equipment with assistance.
  • This position will provide on-call response for emergent IS issues and may require occasional night, weekend, holiday and/or overtime work.
  • May require travel between PHS offices/server sites.
  • Must participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
  • This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
