The Lab Technician will be responsible for carrying out supporting and scientific tasks related to plant transformation and tissue culture activities. Specifically, this position will be involved in the pipeline for cereals and hemp breeding, but may also take part in the molecular characterization of such plants. The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge of plant tissue culture, plant molecular biology, plant physiology, plant genetics and plant breeding, and will receive further training in these domains.The working environment is varied: laboratory, growth chamber, greenhouse and office. This position will interact with all scientific team members and growth facility staff in the research, planning and delivery of various project goals with seasonal and timeline-driven deadlines. This is a regular full-time position.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Prepares media for plant tissue and bacterial culture; uses autoclave.

Prepares/dissects plant material for various lab studies.

Performs embryo rescue for the wheat accelerated breeding program.

Maintenance of plant tissue cultures under sterile conditions. Collects and prepares tissue samples for phenotypic/genotypic analysis and studies.

Performs seeds germination tests for various lab studies, viability and segregation assays for generation advancement.

Establishes and maintains identity of seeds, plants, flats and genotype samples via stake and sticker methods.

Conducts transplanting activities tissue culture to flats; flats to pots .

Utilizes various databases to maintain inventory of research plants and seeds.

May perform electroporation of plasmid DNA into Agrobacterium cells and maintain bacterial cultures.

May perform plant transformation via Agrobacterium and particle bombardment, selection and regeneration of transgenic tissue; May extract plasmid DNA from E. coli and A. tumefaciens cultures Midi and Mini preps

May perform PCR and run agarose electrophoresis gels.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Experience with standard laboratory techniques such as pipetting, weighing samples, and proper use of volumetric glassware.Research experience with agricultural crops, plant tissue culture techniques is an advantage.Basic understanding of plant genetics, breeding and physiology is also an advantage.Familiarity with basic molecular biology characterization techniques such as DNA extraction and PCR is an advantage.EDUCATION:BS Plant Science or related; or AS with experience in plant science.Why Kelly ® ?With Kelly, you’ll have access to some of the world’s highest-regarded scientific organizations—providing you with opportunities to work on today’s most challenging, research-intensive, and relevantprojects.
