Position Summary Under the direction of the Animal Care and Facility Operations Manager, this position is responsible for the direct supervision of a team of animal care/cage wash technicians and specialists including assigning work, monitoring and assessing work performance, and recommending hiring and termination decisions. ACP supervisors may also assist with husbandry, cage wash, and/or Other technical support functions as required. Key Responsibilities include:

Supervises support staff employees directly including selection, training, performance appraisal and work allocation.

Schedules and assigns work to individuals and inspects upon completion. Oversees efficiency and effectiveness of work assigned to direct reports.

Interprets and applies the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" published by the NIH, and all relevant City of Hope, Federal, State and local rules/regulations/guidelines.

Ensures that records are maintained in conformance to institutional policies, as well as regulatory agency and government directives. This includes facility and equipment maintenance logs, autoclave, RO and cage wash records, and other records as required.

Provides investigators assistance with animal housing/procedure rooms set up, fogging, equipment set up, specialized water and caging requests as they pertain to individual species and research projects.

Provides technical services to investigators including mixing and dispensing special diets, medicating drinking water or assisting with specific restraint and handling procedures.

When supervising animal care staff: Assists in establishing, initiating and overseeing animal room environmental parameters including temperatures, air exchange, light cycles, etc., as they pertain to individual species and research projects.

When supervising operations staff: Responsible for overseeing ACP daily cagewash operations, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and in-house repairs of cagewash equipment, RO watering systems, watchdog facility access, animal transfer stations, biosafety and fume hoods, and rack and caging systems.

When supervising animal care staff: Maintains accurate census and initiates orders for, husbandry supplies and equipment as indicated.

When supervising operations staff: Maintains accurate inventories in cagewash and initiates orders for, caging and housing supplies, facility maintenance disposables, and equipment as indicated.

Identify, report and coordinate physical plant or equipment repairs. Monitor central plan operations - steam, water softeners, domestic water as they relate to ACP equipment and reports service issues promptly. Communicates with campus maintenance personnel to troubleshoot, identify and resolve issues and restore facility operations.

Ensures personnel compliance with health and safety regulations.

Recommends employment and termination decisions.

Monitors facility security standards and makes necessary recommendations to the Manager.

Interviews/selects animal care and operations staff, manages and evaluates performance, ensures compliance with COH policies and procedures and initiates and/or makes recommendations for personnel actions.

Participates in and/or conducts teaching activities by demonstrating techniques or procedures. Writes SOPs to ensure consistency in training, documents training sessions and maintains training records.

Provides information needed for annual budget projections by tracking use of materials, supplies, and equipment repairs throughout the year and provide an estimate on quantity or funds needed for the upcoming year.

Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

QualificationsBasic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

Associate degree relevant to areas of responsibility. High school or equivalent and >5 years relevant experience may substitute for Associate degree

Four years of related animal care experience ideally with demonstrated supervisory ability

Required Certification/Licensure:

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATg) certification (or possess a current LAT certification with LATg certification obtained within 6 months of hire);

Valid California Driver License.

Preferred education experience and skills:

Supervisory experience preferred
