Job Summary The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a diverse scientific organization that provides a broad and innovative research and development backplane for a growing space enterprise. The Propulsion Science Department is seeking an Electric Propulsion and Plasma Science Section Manager with a strong foundation in plasma physics, electric propulsion technologies and the evolving commercial landscape, and extensive practical experience in thruster testing, vacuum systems, plasma diagnostics, multipactor /RF breakdown, electrostatic discharges, and plasma material interactions. This is a full-time position located 100% onsite in El Segundo, CA, with remote flexibility as business needs allow . Highlights of our lab's capabilities can be seen here: Aerospace Virtual Tours What You'll Be Doing- You will be managing a team of scientists and support staff working multiple projects. You will identify issues, concerns, and needs in the areas of electric propulsion, multipactor /RF breakdown, electrostatic discharge, and plasma materials interactions and work with your team to develop recommendations and solutions.
- You will work closely with customers and stakeholders to manage test and analysis tasks.
- You will conduct line management functions including staffing, mentoring, establishing technical direction, allocating staff support, and communicating with upper management regarding technical and programmatic issues.
- You will work with management, senior staff and customers to develop strategic directions, identify new opportunities, and develop proposals to execute on such opportunities.
- Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent is required
- Typically, 8 years of applicable professional or educational experience in structural design, analysis, and test methodologies is required
- Expertise in electric propulsion technologies, thruster testing and analysis, and vacuum systems is required
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent working relations with customers and contractor personnel
- Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
- PhD in a STEM field or equivalent is strongly preferred
- Experience in plasma diagnostics including probes and optical diagnostics , plasma materials interactions, electrostatic discharge, and RF breakdown is highly desirable
- Familiarity with the broader electric propulsion landscape, including government and NSS needs, commercial development, and civil mission requirements and interests is a nice-to-have
- Experience in leading a cross-disciplinary team is preferred
- A Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain SCI access, which is issued by the U.S. government, is strongly preferred . U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
