Job Summary

The Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL), which has more than 100 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.

The Microelectronics Technology Department (MTD) is seeking an Electrical Engineer- Hardware Security to support investigations of microelectronics security and physics of failure for space applications. The successful applicant will investigate and evaluate the security and reliability of advanced microelectronics for satellite systems. This will include modeling and simulation and the development of novel laboratory techniques to assess these technologies. The types of analyses that will be performed include data stream security, attack countermeasures, design reverse engineering, and fault isolation. This full-time position will be a hybrid work model with some onsite work required in El Segundo, CA.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Serve National Space Security programs by providing microelectronics reliability and security assessments
  • You will conduct research on topics related to IC technology qualification and assurance
  • S/he will develop novel capabilities to characterize the security of advanced microelectronics for critical applications
  • Perform failure analysis and reverse engineering investigations
  • Publish papers and present work at conferences and other communities of interest

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's in electrical engineering, physics, or computer engineering, or equivalent is required
  • Typically (5) years' experience in a microelectronics-related industry or applicable professional or educational experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical personnel via oral and written forms
  • In depth knowledge of integrated circuits
  • Proficient in MATLAB, C/C, and/or Python
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • PhD in electrical engineering, physics, or computer engineering is highly preferred
  • In depth knowledge of semiconductor physics and failure analysis is desirable
  • Knowledge of electronic device packaging and fabrication is a nice-to-have
  • Understanding of focused ion beam (FIB), and laser scanning microscopy for fault identification in failed devices is preferred
  • Experience with FIB circuit edit techniques is preferred
