Job Summary The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments. This position will have opportunity to substantively contribute to the design, deployment and test of mission-scale architectures that are being used to process space-originating data into product using commercial cloud technologies within DoD conformed operational environments. The Embedded Control Systems Department (ECSD) performs independent verification and validation of flight software embedded within avionics systems aboard launch vehicles, spacecraft, and other space systems. Our multidisciplinary staff provides technical oversight throughout the flight software development process, from requirements definition to day-of-launch and on-orbit operations. We develop high-fidelity closed-loop hardware and software testbeds to test the software and assess its readiness for flight. In addition, we develop and test real-time embedded software for picosats, drones, and other emerging technologies. We are looking for STEM engineers with a passion for space and software development to be part of our team, supporting the variety of space projects and providing innovative solutions for our customers. This full-time position will be located in El Segundo, CA and can support telework multiple days per week. What You'll Be Doing- D evelop models of space system components such as sensors, actuators, and vehicle dynamics for use in software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and emulator-based simulators
- Conduct tests and perform analyses of software systems embedded within launch vehicles, spacecraft, picosats, and other mission-critical components of space systems
- Maintain and grow the capabilities of simulators used to support software validation, on-orbit anomaly resolution, and day-of-launch mission assurance activities
- Support flight software verification through requirements analyses, design and code peer reviews, and unit test inspections and analyses
- Prepare written reports of analysis & testing findings and deliver verbal reports & technical presentations to program office and government customers
- Help shape the tools and procedures used to enhance data analysis, testing, and simulation capabilities by leveraging automation at every step in the workflow
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent
- Typically, 2 years of applicable professional or educational experience is required
- Experience with at least one modern language such as Python, Java, C, or C# including object-oriented design
- Experience with one or more of the following subjects: spacecraft dynamics, control systems, control algorithm design, or modeling & simulation
- This position requirestheability to obtain and maintain a securityclearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
- Typically, 5 years of applicable professional or educational experience is required
- Experience with software development processes and tools including compilers, IDEs, software engineering, coding standards, software metrics and code verification
- Coursework or experience relevant to launch vehicles and/or spacecraft
- Experience with machine learning and AI development
- Experience in developing and/or testing real-time embedded software
- Experience with GPU software development
- A current and active TS/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government is highly desirable. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
