Job Title: Propulsion Research Engineer Job Summary The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments. The Combustion and Dynamics Engineering section, within the Propulsion Department, develops analytical and experimental tools to analyze and improve combustion and dynamic systems. As part of our lean, high-performance team, you will collaborate with aerospace companies and laboratories across the country to research, develop, and execute innovative propulsion system concepts for the next generation of space systems. Your work will enable our customer to make critical decisions and deliver exquisite national capabilities to space on time, every time. This is a full-time position position which will follow a hybrid work model, offering partially remote work as business needs allow with onsite work required at our El Segundo, CA location. This position is available as a Member of Technical Staff or Senior Member of Technical Staff What You'll Be Doing- Develop ing and execut ing laboratory experiments that support fundamental and applied research into chemical propulsion technologies
- Writing technical reports and papers to communicate results to our customers and publish in scholarly journals
- Crafting briefings to communicate results and recommendations to technical management, program offices, government personnel, and at technical conferences
- Collaborating effectively with contractors to scope research efforts needed to improve the performance and reliability of propulsion systems
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent is required
- Typically, 2 years of applicable professional or educational experience is required
- Demonstrated ability to plan, conduct, and execute tasks to solve technical problems
- Experience designing and analyzing aerospace hardware with common software tools (e.g., MATLAB, Solidworks , Ansys)
- Experience with common measurement sensors, experiment controls, and data acquisition tools (e.g., LabVIEW)
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, customers, and external contractors
- Ability to work in a laboratory setting
- Ability to communicate requirements, deadlines, and priorities to machinists and laboratory technicians
- Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
- This position requirestheability to obtain and maintain a securityclearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
- Typically, 5 years of applicable professional or educational experience is required
- Advanced degree in a STEM field or equivalent is highly preferred
- Experience designing and testing high pressure systems and/or high-speed rotating machinery
