Job Summary

Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) has more than 100 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.

The Radiation Effects Scientist position within PSL's Space Sciences Department involves conducting fundamental and applied engineering and science research to solve complex problems in the effects of the space radiation environment on space system design and operation. This role involves critical research into mission impacts from the space environment and informs customers of mission-appropriate solutions. The role also includes effectively communicating reports on scientific and application results through direct interactions with customers, participation in scientific conferences, and through peer-reviewed publications.

This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA, offering a hybrid work model that combines regular onsite laboratory work and remote flexibility as the business needs allow.

What You'll Be Doing
  • You will support a wide variety of critical space programs in the areas of radiation and space environmental hazards to include hazard assessment, testing methodology, and the uptake of the latest results in civil, commercial, and academic communities to ensure mission success
  • S/he will conduct testing of microelectronic parts at particle accelerator and other facilities for single-event phenomena, total dose, and other radiation effects
  • You will also conduct research on radiation effects in microelectronics and deliver results in conferences and peer-reviewed publications
  • Be on the cutting edge to design advanced radiation monitors and instrumentation for laboratory and spaceflight applications to understand and characterize these environmental hazards

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, physics, or closely related field is required
  • Typically, 5 or more years of applicable professional or educational experience is required
  • Understanding of particle interactions with matter and electronics as well as a general understanding of accelerator physics
  • Understanding of microelectronics function and operation as well as technological and industry trends
  • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills with the ability to articulate complex technical issues
  • Willing to travel domestically and/or internationally approx. 10%
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • Typically, 8 or more years of experience in testing of electronics parts for radiation effects is highly preferred
  • Experience with community engagement in radiation effects on microelectronics is desirable
  • Current TS/SSBI (SCI) security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance is highly desirable
