Job Summary

Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) has more than 100 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.

The Imaging Spectroscopy Department (ISD) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Remote Sensing Scientist. The position supplements an existing team of experienced personnel who perform a range of scientific, laboratory, field, and airborne hyperspectral sensor operations and analysis. This position will focus on analysis and characterization of spectral imaging sensors. This position will be located 100% onsite in El Segundo, CA with consideration for a flexible work schedule as work permits.

What You'll Be Doing
  • You will be performing data analysis and characterization of spectral systems in the visible through longwave infrared
  • Performing characterization and calibration of spectral systems in the visible through longwave infrared
  • S/he will develop new exploitation algorithms for state-of-the-art imaging sensors
  • Supplementary activities include working with scientists in research settings, technicians working in modern lab environments, and support to ground-based remote area operations

This position is available as a Research Scientist or a Senior Scientist

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

Research Scientist
  • Master's degree in chemistry, physics, astronomy, remote sensing, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline with experience in imaging systems
  • Typically, 8 years of experience with characterization or algorithm development for spectral imaging systems is required
  • Experience in analysis of ground and airborne remote sensing and participating in live sensor missions and/or performed associated data processing and analysis
  • Strong scientific programming skills: MATLAB, IDL, Python, C, etc.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance

Senior Scientist

Same requirements as a Research Scientist noted above, in addition to:
  • Advanced degree in chemistry, physics, astronomy, remote sensing, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline with experience in imaging systems
  • Typically, 12 years of experience with characterization or algorithm development for spectral imaging systems is required
  • You will lead and participate in proposals to customer organizations for research funding and collaborate within the Corporation and with external organizations to develop and field innovative techniques for remote sensing
  • Experience in building multi-organization collaborations and working with contractors and/or program offices

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

Research Scientist or Senior Scientist
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing, characterizing and calibrating electro-optical systems
  • Demonstrated experience with performing analysis and understanding complex instrument systems that support scientific investigation
  • You should have strong people management skills which includes: training, motivating and directing employees to optimize workplace productivity and promote professional growth
  • A current and active TS/ SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government is highly preferred. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
