Overview

Under direct supervision and direction of the Mental Health Professional Supervisor or higher licensed medical professional, the Mental Health Associate effectively applies mental health expertise and clinical skills in providing Mental Health Services to persons served or clients resulting in an optimal level of care and significant achievements in therapeutic outcomes. The Mental Health Associate will be supervised for at least one hour for every 10 hours of therapy conducted.

Qualifications

Education for Mental Health Professional:
  • Master's degree program in Clinical Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy or Licensed Clinical Social Worker or related field

Experience for Mental Health Professional:
  • At least 2,000 supervised clinical hours preferred

Licenses/Certifications for Mental Health Professional:
  • Current (and must maintain) lifesaving BLS certification through AHA
Responsibilities

  1. Conducts intakes, evaluations, and /or assessments for persons served referred by Security, Healthcare staff, and other Community sources
  2. Conducts evaluations to assess the treatment needs of persons served that request or desire mental health services within the correctional facility setting
  3. Identifies mental health symptoms, treatment needs, and makes appropriate recommendations to the healthcare unit and security staff regarding the direction or required level of care
  4. Recommends special housing or special watch and/or observations to security based on clinical findings
  5. Makes a referral to nursing services based on reported symptoms by the persons served
  6. Recommends medication evaluations to the MD when necessary and coordinates closely with the Prescriber or Psychiatrist to ensure that persons served requiring evaluation or re-evaluation for medication are seen in a timely manner and the Prescriber is aware of any information pertinent to the persons served clinical condition
  7. Assists in the management of medications and is able to identify when persons served are at risk due to side effects
  8. Recommends and conducts other non-pharmacological treatments such as group or individual therapy, when appropriate
  9. Provides consultation to security and healthcare staff regarding persons served behavior, safety concerns or other mental health concerns
  10. Identifies and conducts other essential treatment services such as, psychoeducational groups, art therapy, pre-release counseling and other transitional groups, when appropriate or when applicable
  11. Is able to provide linkage and/or discharge planning services when necessary or when appropriate or applicable
  12. Provides mental health crisis intervention for the entire facility
  13. Provides suicide intervention and management of suicidal and high-risk persons served
  14. Provides clinical supervision for persons served or patients on his/her caseload
  15. Provides treatment plans and services (such as group therapy) for persons served on his/her caseload and in all areas of the correctional facility including, Special Housing Units and the General Population of the facility with regular updates when needed
  16. When applicable, participates in the treatment programming and planning discussion of problem cases, follow up and monitoring of medication, and general psychiatric input
  17. Attends regular treatment team multidisciplinary meetings, classification meetings, or other required administrative meetings
  18. Participates in CQI and / or QA studies and group sessions
  19. Monitors the clinical condition and treatment needs of special persons served population (e.g. Guilty but Mentally Ill or persons served receiving anti-psychotic medication) as determined necessary by institution or agency directive or policy
  20. Works effectively with all staff including security, healthcare and administrative staff
  21. Provides staff training in relevant mental health issues such as signs and symptoms of mental illness, management of mentally ill persons served, crisis intervention and related topics
  22. Chart all findings in persons served record providing written summaries of history, diagnosis and treatment course or other documentation requirements as outlined by CMGC and Facility
  23. When applicable, initiates involuntary hospitalization for those persons served who need to be transferred to outside Mental Health facilities. Generates appropriate paperwork relevant to the hospitalization
  24. Provides services in compliance with Facility and Company Safety and Mental Health Policies and Procedures
  25. May assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process of potential staff
  26. May assist for orientation and training of new employees
  27. Perform other duties as assigned.
