Position Overview:Sutter Regional Medical Foundation is the Greater Solano and Contra Costa County's largest multi-specialty physician organization. Serving the community for over 50 years, its doctors and other health professionals pride themselves on offering high-quality, compassionate care out of five care centers in Vacaville, Fairfield, Vallejo, Rio Vista, and Antioch California.POSITION SUMMARY :The Operating Room Registered Nurse is directly responsible for patient care during surgical procedures and indirectly responsible through coordination and information sharing of both pre- and post-op care.The nurse will assist the anesthesiologist and surgeon during the procedure.The OR RN serves as a role model and mentor in the development of clinical skills, communication skills, problem-solving, critical thinking, assessment and team work.The OR RN observes, evaluates and monitors the delivery of care and services in the OR and recommends changes in systems and processes to remove barriers in providing efficient, cost effective care.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Plans for patient care

Reviews pre-operative patient information including H&P and consent.

Assists anesthesia.

Advocates for patient safety.

Trains and mentors new personnel.

Acts as team leader during surgery.

Plans and implements patient education prior to surgery.

Reports events and pertinent historical data to receiving nurse in PACU.

Prepares operating room for the patient

Prepares and maintains a clean, clutter-free environment conductive to patient and personnel safety.

Assists in the preparation and maintenance of a clean, clutter-free environment.

Determines the availability of all necessary equipment, supplies, instruments and implants and assists in the procurement of deficiencies.

Assists in the proper preparation of supplies, medication, equipment and instrumentation involved in patient care.

Assists with room clean-up, turnover and stocking.

Completes thorough and legible perioperative documentation, including specimens and implants.

Demonstrates knowledge of computer system for the purposes of printing preference cards and editing preference cards.

Continually updates preference cards.

Completes accurate charge entries on preference card.

Follows organization infection control policies.

Is knowledgeable of aseptic technique and when it is used.

Demonstrates knowledge of standard precautions and utilizes same in daily practice.

Identifies resources for problem solving

Stays informed of unit activities/changes.

Adheres to the policies of the Surgery Center.

Seeks educational opportunities to increase clinical competence and enhance personal and professional growth.

Completes mandatory classes relative to job responsibilities at the facility as well as meeting continuing education requirements for certifications.

Cross-trains as needed to assist in Pre-Op, PACU or Endoscopy.

Participates in budgetary, utilization and cost containment and reduction activities.

Assists in developing policies and procedures.

Participates in QI activities.

Exercises a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion and decision making.

Ability to accept constructive and instructive criticism and implement corrective action.

Ability to perform responsibilities with a bio, psycho, social and technical approach incorporating those theories with the learned principles underlying treatment and nursing care.

Ability to receive and give direction and to identify and use proper chain of command.

Participates in staff meetings, committees, staff development and educational programs to meet personal, professional, facility certification and regulatory requirements as defined in licensure requirements, Medicare and the accreditation organization.

Adheres to the facility Standards of Business Conduct and HIPAA privacy and security requirements.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:Education/Licensure:

Must have a valid current license to practice nursing in the State of California.

A Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.

Experience:· Significant experience working in a multi-specialty OR, preferably in an ambulatory surgery center is required. This level of experience is typically achieved in approximately three years.Knowledge:

Demonstrated knowledge and interpersonal skills necessary to tactfully interact with diverse health professionals, physicians and patients.

Extensive knowledge of AORN Standards, infection control and sterilization practices are required.

Must have current knowledge of instrumentation and equipment utilized for various surgical specialties.

Knowledge of the use and function of surgical equipment is required.

Must have a working knowledge of applicable regulations and standards.

Special Skills/Equipment:· Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communications, functional supervision/ delegation and human relations is required· Must be a flexible, creative individual who is open to change along with the ability to handle multiple priorities.· Requires the ability to operate and trouble-shoot OR surgical equipment.· ACLS/PALS required for all registered nurses.· Computer skills are required.· Adult training skills are preferred.Physical Requirements:

Must exhibit desirable trunk and extremity mobility and strength to perform job duties.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 35 pounds safely.

Must be able to push gurneys with patient up to 400 pounds (2 people pushing gurney)

Push wheelchair up to 400 pounds.

Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, reach overhead, and assist with physically transferring patients from gurneys to OR tables and wheelchairs and from wheelchairs to personal transportation.

Must be able to see, hear and speak English.

Must be able to sit, stand and walk for long periods.

Must be able to wear a lead apron.
