UTILITY WORKER/BUS DRIVER

Definition

Under general supervision, to perform a variety of custodial, grounds keeping and light maintenance work in the repair and upkeep of school grounds and buildings; to drive a school bus on designated routes, field trips and special events; and to do related work as assigned by supervisor.

Examples of Duties

1. Makes minor, non-technical repairs such as replacing lights and adjusting desks and other furniture.

2. Overseas after-school uses of buildings and grounds.

3. Checks rest rooms and cleans them as necessary.

4. Sweeps halls.

5. Surveys buildings and grounds for hazards and reports findings to supervisors.

6. Takes down flags.

7. Arranges rooms for meetings, classes or special events.

8. May keep custodial records for facility to which assigned.

9. Confers with supervisors regarding care and cleaning problems and needs.

10. Performs preventative maintenance of equipment and makes minor repairs.

11. Mows lawns and fields.

12. Trims shrubs, hedges and trees.

13. Sprays flowers and shrubs with insecticides.

14. Waters lawns and fields.

15. Hoes weeds and rakes lawns.

16. Operates power mower and edger.

17. Checks, services, repairs and helps install sprinkler systems.

18. Operates hand and power mowers and spray equipment.

19. Spades and otherwise prepares grounds around flowers and shrubs.

20. Performs general grounds cleanup including picking up of paper and trash on grounds areas.

21. Prepares track and playing fields for athletic events.

22. May drive a truck or tractor.

23. Drives a school bus daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules.

24. Picks up and discharges students.

25. Escorts students across streets or roadways, stopping traffic as necessary.

26. May transport students and teachers on field trips to various locations, making departure and arrival times as scheduled.

27. Services buses with gas and oil.

28. Checks vehicles daily to maintain safe operating condition.

29. Cleans windshields and headlights.

30. Washes and waxes vehicles.

3l Advises mechanics of necessary repairs.

32. Attends scheduled safety meetings and safety programs.

33. Maintains order among students on buses.

34. Follows District policies regarding discipline of students and contact with parents and the public.

35. Reports incidents which affect the safety of pupils.

36. May schedule the most efficient route in picking up and discharging students.

Employment Standards

Education and Experience: Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance and possession of a School Bus Operator's Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol and some experience in farming or minor maintenance of buildings and equipment.

Knowledge and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of common methods, materials and equipment used in custodial, grounds keeping and light maintenance work.

2. Knowledge of safe driving practices.

3. Knowledge of provisions of the California Vehicle Code and the State Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting students.

4. Knowledge of first aid practices.

5. Ability to use, operate and care for tools and equipment related to custodial, grounds and light maintenance work.

6. Ability to drive a school bus safely and efficiently.

7. Ability to maintain order among students on a school bus.

8. Ability to recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action.

9. Ability to learn a designated bus route, including stops and traffic hazards.

10. Ability to maintain simple records.

11. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.

12. Ability to work cooperatively with others.

License or Other Requirements: Possession of a valid California Special Driver Certificate issued through examination by the California Highway Patrol. In order to obtain the certificate, a candidate must first possess a minimum requirement Class B License with Passenger Transportation Endorsement with no restrictions, issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles, a first aid certificate comparable to the Standard Red Cross first aid card and a Medical Examiner Certificate.
