This is essential to innovation and creativity for continued success of the Laboratory's mission. Job Description We have an opening for aDeputy HPC Senior Engineer. You will be responsible for assisting with the engineering and management of the facilities which house the Laboratory's high performance computing infrastructure and supercomputing infrastructure. You will also assist in overseeing the operations of approximately 100,000 square feet of raised computer floor, provide technical leadership, and participate in Institutional activities. This position is in Computing's Livermore Computing (LC) division, reporting to the LC Chief Engineer.This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.In this roleyou will- Lead the development and implementation of WSC LC strategies. Lead managers to formulate, implement, and monitor the program operational plans.
- Establish appropriate metrics to direct continual improvements in WCI directorate and LC Operations.
- Oversee the management of facility activities and processes involving work control, safety basis documentation, facility safety plans, conduct of operations matrices, configuration management, access control, training, quality assurance, and emergency preparedness.
- Determine the power and mechanical needs of the LC computer centers, make recommendations for upgrades and modifications, and manage the implementation of those modifications to LC facilities.
- Monitor LC's electrical power and mechanical load, develop maintenance plans, and prepare forecasts of future electric loads to ensure that building systems are adequate, reliable and meet projected computational load requirements.
- Participate in LC budget planning for facility operations and improvements.
- Perform self-assessments and respond to audits and facility emergencies, both during normal work hours and outside of regular business hours.
- Participate in external conferences and make presentations on experiences related to building and/or power and mechanical systems serving the LC computer systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Update the HPC Facility Master Plan.
- Develop the HPC Maintenance Plan for ECFM equipment.
- Develop Retrocomissioning Plan for HPC facilities.
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant programmatic or operations management experience with the ability to meet operations requirements while delivering on program commitments.
- Significant experience managing issues that affect facility safety, security, and regulatory compliance effectively and implementing compliance-related aspects of federal, state and DOE regulations and directives, including responding to internal and external auditors and reviewers.
- Advanced ability to maintain a strong safety and security culture in the workplace as a priority while still meeting institutional requirements.
- Significant leadership experience with a commitment to diversity and fostering an inclusive and equitable organization.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills to effectively explain, direct, present, advise, negotiate, and influence all levels of management, executives, and internal and external customers and sponsors, and experience working across organizational lines as a recognized consensus builder with solid customer service skills.
- Substantial management, technical, administrative, and leadership skills that enable building positive, trust-based relationships, executing performance management and directing and monitoring the work of others effectively.
- Expert knowledge of strategic planning, advanced problem solving, decision-making, and analytical skills necessary to independently anticipate, analyze, advise, recommend, approve appropriate actions, and implement solutions to highly complex issues having significant impact.
- Substantial experience determining staffing, budget management, and organizational development needs of a large organization.
