Job Description We have an opening for a Network Engineer with expertise supporting diverse enterprise network architectures, including implementation and operations. You will be responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining network hardware and software across a variety of enterprise network environments. This position is in the Enterprise Infrastructure Services Division (EIS) within the Computing Directorate, in support of the Livermore IT Program (LivIT).This position will be filled at eitherthe 393.1 or 393.2 level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.In this role you will- Perform complex network administration tasks to configure, operate, and maintain network equipment including switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, and other equipment.
- Provide troubleshooting and operational support for multiple datacenter, campus, and WAN networks.
- Design and implement WAN, campus, and datacenter networks utilizing advanced network technologies such as EVPN VXLAN, MPLS, and MVPN.
- Collaborate with Cyber Security Team to implement comprehensive network security architectures, policies, and monitoring.
- Collaborate with vendors to evaluate network products and services.
- Thrive in a fast paced and challenging environment, with multiple competing priorities, while managing to maintain sound judgement and excellent customer service.
- Perform occasional work outside normal business hours in order to provide support for network operations and maintenance activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Design and deliver advanced, customized networks, in alignment with customer requirements and enterprise network strategies.
- Ability to work independently to configure and effectively utilize network management and monitoring tools.
- Diagnose, resolve, and document highly complex network problems.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
- Extensive experience in network system design, configuration, implementation, documentation, and operations.
- Broad and in-depth knowledge of and experience with network routing and switching, including OSPF or IS-IS, BGP, and Spanning-tree.
- Familiarity with common network automation frameworks such as Ansible and Python.
- Broad and in-depth knowledge of and experience in firewall configuration and maintenance, particularly Palo Alto NGFW and Cisco ASA.
- Working knowledge of edge port security features, such as 802.1x.
- Proficient interpersonal and verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to work independently and interact with customers and team members.
- Extensive experience developing advanced architecture solutions.
- Highly advanced troubleshooting skills and experience solving problems by analyzing protocol interactions collected in packet traces.
- Experience training and mentoring team members in network engineering and architecture.
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional Certifications (CCNP), or comparable industry certification from another vendor.
- Experience with network overlay technologies such as GRE, IPSec, MPLS, and VXLAN.
- Experience with Network Access Control and policy engine software such as Cisco Identity Services Engine.
