WHY WE NEED YOU Mechanical and Thermal Team is responsible for the design and development of any sub-systems and test rigs requiring mechanical or thermal design. We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design and development of a complex sub-system. This role is based in Los Angeles, with occasional travel to our Las Vegas build/test facility.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Lead of the mechanical design of complex systems or sub-systems (such as the vehicle’s chassis, mechanisms, or test rigs) from conceptualization through testing and production
  • Analyze and verify the design through hand calculations and/or FEA
  • Create and maintain CAD models and engineering drawings of complex sub-assemblies.
  • Review and provide feedback on design and engineering drawings of other engineers
  • Iterate design based on analysis, prototyping and testing learnings; provide feedback to drive system level architecture trades
  • Help define requirements and/or verification and validation testing plans
  • Provide input to scoping component or subscale tests to mitigate design risks
  • Work with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely build and delivery of functional hardware
  • Help develop processes and best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality engineering design in all products; leverage industry best practices

WHAT YOU’VE DONE
  • S or M.S degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related engineering field
  • Worked with minimal supervision to complete the mechanical design of complex sub-assemblies
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of mechanical design sizing and modeling at various levels of fidelity from roughly-sized concepts to fully-detailed models analyzed against a suite of load cases
  • Knowledge of attachments and joints and mechanics of materials
  • Hands-on knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods; experience designing and delivering components from a variety of manufacturing methods
  • Completed tolerance stack-ups to ensure proper fit and function of an assembly
  • Proficient level skill in at least one CAD package, strong working knowledge of GD&T
  • Experience meeting challenging deadlines while handling multiple responsibilities
  • Strong intuition and knowledge within mechanical system design from first principles through design and production
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

NICE TO HAVE
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience
  • Experience leading a mechanical design from concept through release, build, test and to product
  • Experience designing critical load-bearing structures
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (common constraints and load types and their behavior, a strong sense for good approximations of physical situations, basic meshing)
  • Deep experience in GD&T
  • Experience with validation and verification of mechanical systems using laboratory and in-field testing
  • Experience working in a dynamic start-up environment
