Mechanical Design Engineer - Thermal

California, Los angeles, 90001 Los angeles USA

Vacancy expired!

To connect the world, we must reflect the world. At Virgin Hyperloop, we’re bringing together unique perspectives, empowering our community to celebrate all voices, and creating equal opportunities to build, grow, and thrive.

WHY WE NEED YOU The Mechanical and Thermal Team designs, develops and tests systems requiring mechanical and thermal design, including the Thermal Management System. This system collects and rejects all thermal energy from heat producing components on the hyperloop cargo vehicle. It consists of the primary heat rejection devices as well as the coolant distribution throughout the vehicle. This role is based in Los Angeles, with occasional travel to our Las Vegas build/test facility.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Be responsible for the mechanical and thermal design of complex sub-systems within the thermal management system
  • Design and package the coolant network including vehicle components, routing, valves, pumps, tanks, heat exchangers and our primary heat rejection and storage devices
  • Design compact heat rejection devices for sub-system components including cold plates and heat sinks and their interface to heat sources and the thermal management system
  • Create and maintain CAD models of complex sub-assemblies and create engineering drawings
  • Leverage industry experience and best practices to ensure consistent and high-quality engineering design in all products
  • Work with internal teams and external vendors to ensure timely build and delivery of functional hardware

WHAT YOU'VE DONE Candidates must have strong intuition and knowledge within thermal system design from first principles through design and production. They must have strong communication and collaboration skills, be able to solve complex problems and thrive in a fast-pace, technically uncertain environment, while making decisions, and leading tasks to meet challenging deadlines. In addition, the candidate must possess the following:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or related fields
  • Proficient experience with CAD (NX, Solidworks etc.)
  • Flow network hardware experience, preferably within an aerospace, automotive or electric vehicle application
  • Experience designing, testing, and building a thermal management component or system
  • Familiarity with commercial specification and procurement of production-level thermal hardware
  • Hands-on knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication methods; experience designing and delivering components from a variety of manufacturing methods

NICE TO HAVE
  • Experience with validation and verification of thermal systems using laboratory and in-field testing
  • Experience with high-voltage battery cooling for electric vehicle or energy storage applications
  • Experience with the design and implementation of a production-level multi-component thermal management system and associated thermal limitations
  • Experience with thermal system modelling software (MatLab Simulink SimScape, Kuli, GT-Suite, or similar)
  • Familiarity or experience with multi-phase thermal management technologies (heat pipes, pumped two-phase, vapor compression heat pumps, phase change materials)
  • Excellent project management experience
  • Experience with thermal energy storage or industrial refrigeration equipment

WHY VIRGIN HYPERLOOP Now is your chance to leave your mark on the future. If the thought of building a sustainable, completely new form of high-speed transport sounds exciting, come join our team. Virgin Hyperloop is the first company in the world to have put passengers on a Hyperloop system, and now we’re creating an all-electric cargo transport system for the third millennium. Work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with the best of the best in engineering talent. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something that’s never been done before, a history-making, global solution that will shape the future of logistics and mobility.
