To connect the world, we must reflect the world. At Virgin Hyperloop, we’re bringing together unique perspectives, empowering our community to celebrate all voices, and creating equal opportunities to build, grow, and thrive.

WHY WE NEED YOU The Control Systems team is responsible for delivering vehicle control, from motion control to energy management (electrical, mechanical, thermal). We’re a multidisciplinary, cross-functional team that manages the design from system architecture and controller’s hardware to the embedded software deployed to the vehicle. Virgin Hyperloop needs a Senior Motion Control Engineer to lead the concept, design, implementation, integration, and verification of the Virgin Hyperloop vehicle motion control functionality. The candidate will support the full Hyperloop product life cycle, developing the motion control strategy (propulsion, braking, levitation, and guidance characteristics) for a unique vehicle concept.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Modeling (linear and non-linear) of mechanical, electromagnetic, and electrical plants;
  • The Design, implementation, integration, verification of safety-critical and fault tolerant motion control laws for levitation, guidance, braking, and propulsion subsystems of the vehicle;
  • The stability, performance, safety, and reliability analysis of vehicle motion control laws;
  • Interface with other Controls Engineers, Embedded Systems Engineers, Propulsion Engineers, Power Electronics Engineers and system integration teams;
  • Act as a technical lead, supporting and mentoring a growing team of highly skilled individuals to set goals and align planning with the company’s objectives;
  • Manage program risks and develop mitigation plans and actions to meet project milestones

WHAT YOU'VE DONE
  • Master’s degree in Control, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or another related field and equivalent work experience focused on mechanical systems control;
  • 3+ years of experience in design, implementation, integration, verification of embedded systems or equivalent experience
  • Experience on motion planning with preferred experience in Autonomous Vehicles.
  • Experience in building and analyzing stability and performance tools for control design such as open loop and closed loop bode plot generation, Gain/Phase margin for SISO and or disk margin for MIMO systems
  • Strong knowledge in control theory and methods:
    • Classic control and feedforward control;
    • Classic, optimal, robust, and adaptive control techniques and implementation (loop-shaping, Lyapunov, H-infinity, sliding mode control, LQG/LTR, model adaptive identification controllers, fuzzy-logic, etc);
    • MIMO control of highly redundant systems;
    • Stability/robustness characterization for highly non-linear systems;Convex/nonconvex non-linear constrained optimization techniques;
  • Expert in Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow;
  • Deep understanding of mechanical, electromagnetic and power electronics systems;

NICE TO HAVE
  • PhD degree in Control, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or another related field and equivalent work experience focused on mechanical systems control;
  • Model-in-the-loop (MIL), Software-in-the-loop (SIL); hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of embedded systems;
  • Experience with statistical estimation techniques (Kalman, extended Kalman, Unscented Kalman Filter, complementary filtering);
  • Experience in system and state identification techniques (extended state observers);
  • Experience in digital signal processing and sensor fusion;
  • Experience in validating computational models through experimental data analysis and system identification
  • Experience with version control (Git) specifically with regards to MATLAB and Simulink
  • Experience with dynamic identification techniques and experimentation for structures and vehicles
  • Experience in flexible mode analysis in the context of motion control;
