Thermal Engineer

California, Los angeles, 90001 Los angeles USA

Vacancy expired!

To connect the world, we must reflect the world. At Virgin Hyperloop, we’re bringing together unique perspectives, empowering our community to celebrate all voices, and creating equal opportunities to build, grow, and thrive.

WHY WE NEED YOU: The Thermal Management Team is responsible for providing the system that collects and rejects all thermal energy from the heat-producing components on the hyperloop cargo vehicle. This system consists of the primary heat rejection devices as well as the coolant distribution throughout the vehicle to the electromagnetic engines, batteries, and power electronics.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
  • Fully own the mechanical and thermal design of complex sub-systems within the thermal management system
  • Collaborate with all vehicle-based subsystems to determine their cooling needs including the motor, levitation, battery, and power electronics teams
  • Modeling the coolant network including vehicle components, routing, valves, pumps, tanks, heat exchangers, and our primary heat rejection and storage devices
  • Develop compact heat rejection devices for sub-system components including cold plates and heat sinks, and their interfaces to heat sources and the thermal management system
  • Leverage industry experience and best practices to ensure consistent & high-quality engineering design in all products

WHAT YOU’VE DONE: Candidates must have strong intuition and knowledge within thermal system design from first principles through design and production. They must have strong communication and collaboration skills, be able to solve complex problems and thrive in a fast-pace, technically uncertain environment, while making decisions, and leading tasks to meet challenging deadlines. In addition, the candidate must possess the following:
  • 2 + years of related engineering experience
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related engineering field
  • Flow network hardware and control experience within an aerospace, automotive, or electric vehicle application
  • Experience with thermal system modelling software (MatLab Simulink SimScape, Kuli, GT-Suite, or similar)
  • Understanding of thermal modelling at various levels of fidelity (1-D reduced order component models, thermal networks, 2-D and 3-D thermal FEA)
  • Experience designing, testing, and building a thermal management component or system
  • Familiarity with commercial specification and procurement of production-level thermal hardware (make vs. buy trades, COTS vs. custom, typical lead times, etc.)
  • Experience with validation and verification of thermal systems using laboratory and in-field testing

NICE TO HAVE:
  • Experience with high-voltage battery cooling for electric vehicle or energy storage applications
  • Experience with the design and implementation of a production-level multi-component thermal management system and associated thermal limitations
  • Familiarity with CAD (NX, Solidworks, etc)
  • Familiarity or experience with multi-phase thermal management technologies (heat pipes, pumped two-phase, vapor compression heat pumps, phase change materials)
  • Excellent project management experience
  • Experience with thermal energy storage or industrial refrigeration equipment
