Vacancy expired!

Call for storyboard, cartoonist, or humorist writer.

Imago Theatre based in Portland, Oregon is creating a new non-verbal production of “creature theatre” that will tour internationally. The show is a series of short pieces where animals are anthropomorphized to reveal nuances of human nature that are humorous or mystifying.

Here’s an example:

This piece titled “Hippos” is from our show ZooZoo.https://vimeo.com/24756002

As we build this “creature show” for family audiences, we want a comedy writer that is a visual artist or non-verbal writer to provide input. We are seeking a cartoonist or story board artist that can think in visual non-verbal ways and give story or concept directions to our ideas.

This is a "work for hire" position. Your compensation is negotiable. The person we hire will be on a retainer. This is a long process and when ideas arise, you can write, draw, video or photograph your idea to us.

To submit an application for a position in this project, do two things.

1. Send us a link or samples of your story boards, cartoons, or non-verbal comedy writing.

2. Provide feedback on either scenario A or B or both: If we use your submitted idea, we will negotiate a fee for this idea. (keep in mind we are seeking long-term artist, but we want to compensate for ideas we use as well) You can submit your idea as a narrative, a cartoon or a story board.

Scenario A

Reindeers at Christmas

It is the holidays. A group of reindeers are at a holiday part. The reindeers are standing upright, because they are people. They wear fur coats. The cast is no more than four performers.

Two reindeers are left alone. They each give each other gifts. However, one gets rather rotten presents. The other always gets good presents.

The actors wear reindeer mask with antlers that light up to reflect their mood. The one that gets bad gifts – their antler sparks and the lights go out. The one that gets great gifts, their antler lights up with beauty.

Your challenge – this is just a concept, what will make the piece have poignancy? What are in the presents? How does opening the presents build to surprising moments and a conclusion? You can give us other ideas with reindeers in fur coats and antlers, it doesn’t need to be at holiday party with gifts.

The "Hippos" have played internationally and they have been well received because it deals with these aspects.

- The physical comedy is fun and justified

- It deals with a real situation that most couples deal with – sleeping with another person and having insomnia.

- While they are not real hippos, but personified ones, the use of the hippo animal to reflect this human attribute works.

Scenario B

Two to three zebra (people in tights with masks) are hidden in a backdrop that is all stripes. Imagine people upright (not on all fours) wearing costumes that are of a zebra pattern, their masks are striped. They disappear into a back drop and at first the audience can not tell they are there. The zebras step out of the back drop and we see them. At the end of the piece they step back in and disappear.

Challenge: What do the zebras do? What will make this piece either, mystifying, create high illusion, or great comedy? Is there a human condition that can brought out with such a concept?

All pieces have music and sound effects, but words are not used.
