Under supervision of the site administrator and direction of the Head of Plant, the Custodian I performs routine
cleaning tasks in an assigned area, such as sweeping, polishing, vacuuming, waxing, moving and rearranging
furniture and equipment. Custodian I employees usually work alone at job sites.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ï· Using industrial cleaners, sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors
in classrooms, offices, nurses and faculty rooms; cleans, mops, and disinfects multi-purpose rooms,
restrooms; empties and cleans waste containers.
ï· Clean work surfaces, chalkboards; cleans and polishes desks, woodwork, doors and counters.
ï· Assists other personnel in lifting and storing of supplies.
ï· Makes minor site repairs and adjustments to equipment such as desktops, cafeteria tables, classroom
furniture, tightening doors, hinges and knobs, repairing pencil sharpeners, replacing light bulbs,
fluorescent lamps, as well as spot painting.
ï· Maintains custodial equipment.
ï· Performs special custodial work upon request of faculty members and supervisory personnel.
ï· Operates cleaning equipment such as floor cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, leaf
blowers, power washers, sweepers, etc.
ï· Unplugs stopped toilets, sinks or fountains.
ï· Arranges rooms with chairs and tables for meetings and activities.
ï· Performs daily security inspections; secures facility; sets alarms.
ï· Performs assigned duties in a safe manner.
ï· Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
ï· Methods and equipment used in the cleaning of floors, walls, and fixtures.
ï· Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodian work.
ï· Safe work practices.
ABILITY TO:
ï· Read, write and speak English sufficiently to successfully perform required duties.
ï· Hear, speak and write to receive and exchange information.
ï· Read and follow label directions when using any materials and/or equipment.
ï· Exercise extreme caution when using hazardous materials and/or equipment by adhering to the specified
warnings.
ï· Use small power hand tools such as screwdrivers, drills, etc.
ï· Learn to operate motorized sweepers.
ï· Perform manual labor, including stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, lifting, pushing, pulling,
carrying, walking and standing for long periods of time.
ï· Work alone productively for long periods of time.
ï· Complete repetitive tasks.
ï· Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, students and the
public.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
ï· High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Additional related experience and/or training that would
indicate possession of the above skills and abilities.
ï· Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certificate.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
ï· Physical strength/agility sufficient to perform a wide variety of frequent physical tasks including moving
equipment/furniture and operating equipment.
ï· Lift 50 pounds, carry, climb, stoop, bend, reach and perform demanding physical tasks.
ï· Indoors and outdoors work environment; subject to noise from equipment operation; regular exposure to
fumes, dust and odors, which may require use of protective equipment while working; subject to driving
a vehicle to conduct work.
ï· Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment, hand and power
tools; seeing to observe needed and completed repairs; climbing ladders and working from heights;
reaching overhead and horizontally to shelve and retrieve items in high places; standing for extended
periods of time; bending at the waist.
ï· Successful passage of post offer/pre-employment physical required
