We are looking for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist with the Laboratory Department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.Location: Mission Viejo, CAWork Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly hoursShift: 8 hour (Variable) DaysJob Summary:Under the general supervision of the Chief Clinical Laboratory Scientist, obtains and processes patient specimens and performs various clinical laboratory test for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyzes, interprets, and reports test results and ensures accuracy of same. Verifies tests as necessary; directly notifies appropriate personnel of critical results and provides proper documentation. Provides diagnostic laboratory services for the care of neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patient.Essential Functions:PHLEBOTOMY AND SPECIMEN PROCESSING: Assists in phlebotomy duties according to the workload of the department. Uses proper blood sampling techniques to obtain suitable specimens. Accessions and distributes collected specimens by participating in computer receiving, centrifugation, packing, or other processing in preparation for testing. Demonstrates the ability to assess/meet the psycho-social and developmental age-related needs of the specific population served. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

PERFORMANCE OF LABORATORY TESTS: Knowledge and skilled in general laboratory analytical techniques. Integrates tasks to maximize efficiency, with proper consideration to the priorities of orders. Adheres to prescribed test procedures including correct specimen treatment, instrument operation, and test performance to ensure accurate and reliable results are obtained. Recognizes improper instrument function and is capable of independent troubleshooting to resolve test system problems. The transition between work shifts is facilitated by willingly completing work in progress.

RESULTS REPORTING AND DOCUMENTATION: Tests are completed in an accurate and timely fashion to assist in effective clinical management of patient care. Computer entry work is reliable and effective. A good understanding of clinical correlations is applied in evaluating test results. Unexpected test results are confirmed before they are reported, with consideration given to specimen integrity, test limitations or interferences, and patient’s previous findings. Critical values are validated and promptly communicated according to laboratory policy, with careful documentation of the actions taken.

QUALITY CONTROL / PERIODIC MAINTENANCE: Quality control tests are performed according to established Q/C practices and the laboratory’s corrective action plan is utilized in resolving “out-of-control” conditions. Periodic maintenance duties are conducted proficiently and as scheduled. Documentation is consistent and thorough for both of these activities.

PERSONNEL INTERACTIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS: Answers telephones as necessary in a prompt and courteous manner. Responds to outside inquiries accurately and refers them appropriately. Consistently conveys a professional and helpful attitude. Enhances intra and inter-department productivities by interacting with fellow workers in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative environment. Facilitates effective resolutions in difficult situations.

PERSONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT: Maintains technical knowledge of current trends and developments by actively reading scientific journals and other pertinent literature. Attends related seminars and conferences for continuing education. Shares information obtained with staff through written reports, education presentations and other means.

ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEPARTMENT: Pursues activities above the usual realm of duties for the position by using spare time to assist others in their tasks, or by working on special projects. Useful ideas are offered for improvement to department operations. Identifies and assists with resolution of issues that affect quality of service.

Skills:Ability to work independently and use good problem solving skills.

Good knowledge of general laboratory analytical techniques, including instrument operation and computer skills.

Knowledge of clinically relevant laboratory values and ramification of various test results.

Requires moderate mental application and concentration to handle varying procedures and interruptions.

Proficient in required competencies upon completion of orientation as listed on the unit specific Competency Inventory.

Knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems.

Ability to operate standard laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
