FULL-TIME/TEMPORARY

Location: Watsonville, CA

A. Essential Functions:

Under the close supervision of a designated lead person or supervisor, as well as operating within established guidelines and procedures, incumbent in this position works in a variety of field settings with close oversight. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Regulatory Activities “ 70%

Conduct strawberry and cane berry inspections at cooler shipping locations by visually inspecting harvested berries for immature life stages of the target pest.

Conduct strawberry and cane berry field inspections by visually inspecting plants for signs of feeding damage, and immature life stages of the target pest.

Conduct nursery inspections by visually inspecting containerized plants for immature life stages of the target pest.

Collect target pests at each inspection site and place in alcohol vials or Nalgene bottles. Remove suspect insect samples from foliage by using various insect collection tools.

Draw maps to show exact geographic locations for specified activities, follows maps; uses GPS technology to site register samples and packages samples separately to maintain sample and site integrity.

2. Interact with the Public “ 15% (percentage greater for regulatory activities)

Initiate contact with a nursery or cooler representative.

Briefly answer questions about the regulatory activities and/or refer the questioner to the appropriate agency for information.

Interact with the public in a courteous and professional manner.

3. Document Work Completed “ 10%

Complete required cooler, field and nursery inspection and pest submission forms.

Keep daily reports of work completed.

B. Nonessential Functions

Vehicle operation and Tool Maintenance “ 5%

Perform daily vehicle safety and fluid level checks. Clean vehicle interior and exterior.

Safely operate a motor vehicle to travel to designated work areas.

Clean, repair and store all equipment daily. Notify team lead or supervisor when equipment is in need of repair or replacement.

III. WORK ENVIRONMENT

Duties for the job are primarily performed outside of buildings. Weather, temperature, lighting and noise levels may constantly vary. Terrain may vary from smooth and stable to irregular and unstable. The incumbent may be regularly exposed to dust, pollen, moisture and pesticide chemicals associated with insect lures and treatment activities. Driving a vehicle, as well as entering and exiting the vehicle numerous times throughout the workday, is generally required.

IV. INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships; maintain a valid California driver license and good driving record; work well under pressure; and, work cooperatively with other staff members in completing assigned work and meeting required deadlines. Incumbent is required to be available for occasional travel; and be available for overtime as necessary.

V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent in this position will be required, with or without reasonable accommodation, to lift up to 20 pounds on a frequent basis; use repetitive arm and wrist motions; bend, stoop, twist, reach; and, maintain visual acuity.
