Regional Parks is at an exciting time in its organizational history. Having created a Natural Resources Division in 2015, the Department is now looking for a leader to step in and successfully grow, formalize, and manage the division. The Natural Resources Manager will oversee policy development, build partnerships and leverage funding for natural resource conservation, and serve on the management team in order to bring their natural resource expertise to high level decisions. Additionally, this position will:
Advise the department on major environmental policy issues
Oversee and direct staff engaged in monitoring, stewardship, and restoration activities
Leverage funding through grants, donations, contracts, and partnerships
Participate in county-wide environmental/sustainability initiatives
Provide input for master plans, conservation easements, CEQA documents, and other legal frameworks guiding park acquisition and development
Analyze and make recommendations on the environmental impacts of recreational use and projects on park lands
Lead the development and implementation of resource management plans for specific areas and issues like fire, grazing, and invasive plant control
Oversee the conservation benefits of grazing and other vegetation management strategies
Provide natural resource interpretation for media, public audiences, decision-makers, and department programs and products
The ideal candidate will possess:
Extensive experience with natural resource management and public lands development policy
Superb interpersonal and leadership skills
Experience supervising and mentoring staff
An understanding of the County of Sonoma's current natural resource issues
Strong verbal communication skills in order to represent Regional Parks in a number of collaborative landscape-scale conservation initiatives
An advanced degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Ecology, Rangeland Management, or related field
The Sonoma County Regional Parks Natural Resources Division preserves, protects, restores, and enhances the ecological assets of the parks, and promotes public understanding of these outstanding resources. The Division works collaboratively with other departments, agencies, non-profit organizations, local schools, and the region's universities to assess ecological resources and manage them appropriately.
