SUMMARY OF POSITION
Monterey County Health Department's Animal Services Division seeks a dedicated Animal Control Officer who would like to join our team of dedicated professionals.
Animal Control Officers provide field services that include (but are not limited to) local and state ordinance enforcement, stray, injured and aggressive animal pick up, animal bite investigation, noise and nuisance complaints and public education on responsible pet ownership.
Monterey County Animal Services provides field, sheltering and licensing services to over 433,898 residents each year. The department, located within the Administrative Bureau of the County Health Department, operates an Animal Services facility that takes in about 3,000 animals each year.
A list of eligible candidates resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future full-time or temporary vacancies as they arise.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Methods and techniques used in the capture, control, care, handling and disposal of various breeds of animals.
ÂState and local laws pertaining to the control and licensing of animals.
ÂQuickly assess a situation and take appropriate action.
Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Recognize symptoms of rabies and other animal diseases.

Possession of or ability to obtain within six months of employment:
Certificate of completion of Powers of Arrest (832 P.C.).

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:
Experience: Approximately one year of experience handling animals and dealing with the public.
Conditions of Employment:
As a condition of employment, the incumbent will be required to:
Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record or ability to provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority.
The Health Department will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
Be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster or emergency.
