About this Job:
The purpose of the Operations Technician is to assist project leads in delivering on project goals by providing technical assistance in the greenhouse and field, follow and apply all HSES and Stewardship practices, as well as to support site management with the functional activities of a research station.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform greenhouse breeding support duties including: planting and growing transplants, pollination, seed harvest, seed cleaning, labeling, and data recording
Perform fieldwork including: layout, seeding, transplanting, seed harvest, cleaning, and labeling
Supporting efforts to maintain seed stewardship principles of inventory, and performing tasks that include: Data base management, packaging, field trial layout and organization, pollinating, seed processing, document management, and data collection
Performing all tasks and behaving in a manner compliant with and in support of all safety related company policies and practices, including completing all required Company training courses and attending local safety meetings
On-call for various types of farm emergencies or unscheduled work based on business needs or weather
In areas of responsibility and in concert with the farm and greenhouse operations, determine quantities, order, and arrange and/or apply needed agricultural chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides)
Input and maintain data in functional data system
Involvement in all activities of the selection nurseries, disease and insect screening, and commercial trials
Oversee tasks completed by third-party labor to ensure accurate results
Effectively communicating regularly and with peers and supervisors regarding the status of projects and work activities
Qualifications:
Critical knowledge:
Bilingual Spanish and English required for consideration
AA or BS degree preferred; will consider High School Diploma or equivalent
Four (4) to six (6) year's comparable experience in an agriculture field preferred
Critical experience:
Experience in operating agricultural machinery and/or agricultural research equipment
Agricultural research experience or agricultural background preferred
Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:
Must have a valid Driver's License and have, or have ability to acquire and maintain a CDL
Strong computer skill (MS Office, SAP, SharePoint, etc.)
Ability to learn and use proprietary breeding management and seed inventory software systems
Good organizational skills
Ability to work in a team and to communicate with individuals throughout the organization
Ability to use professional concepts and company policies and procedures to solve a wide range of difficult problems in imaginative and practical ways
Ability and motivation to learn new technologies
Ability to learn and perform maintenance and operate research field equipment
Ability to operate seed laboratory equipment including seed conditioning machines, seed counters, and other tools necessary for agricultural research projects

Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in the field or greenhouse
Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of the research cycle
Potential allergens-pollen, fungal spores, chemical pesticides in field or greenhouse Exposure to high and low temperatures, sun, rain, and dust
Some travel required with occasional overnight stays
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear
The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms
