Maxar is seeking a Composites Manufacturing Engineer to join our team in Mountain View, CA.

Your Project

In this role, you will execute, oversee and train in many aspects of Composite manufacturing and testing operations within the department, focusing on product testing and delivery to various customers. You will both ensure the continuation of established processes thru controls and documentation, as well as coordinate the integration of modernized tools into applicable areas of the department which could be improved by technology. This role will include multiple aspects of production engineering, from hands-on assembly of flight payloads in preparation for environmental testing to leadership of testing campaign of large composite structures, requiring extensive coordination, adherence to strict requirements and ability to communicate to different audiences and stakeholders.

What you'll do day-to-day:
  • Gain exposure and general manufacturing engineering experience in a production aerospace composites environment, delivering space-qualified flight hardware to multiple organizations within Maxar and to customers around the world.
  • Quickly integrate and support a number of high-visibility projects within the department; initially providing high-level conceptual support, but eventually following and supporting the project through production and delivery to our customers
  • Identify manpower requirements, forecast cost impacts, coordinate outside support, and manage schedules for designated projects
  • Provide direct engineering support to the composite technician staff for assigned projects to maintain quality and schedule integrity.
  • Participate in costing efforts and cost account management activities for various projects within scope of responsibility.
  • Directly support and oversee the testing operations and efforts associated with the department, gaining opportunities to influence designs, improve processes and increase reliability.
  • Engage with design engineers to review and approve part and tooling assemblies, updating and offering input based on improved Design for Manufacturing (DfM) concepts or solutions.
  • Research and coordinate implementation of upgraded processes and designs to take advantage of new capabilities and technology advancements.
  • Review, update, and manage various training and process documents, coordinate new employee training and support the process of quickly inserting new engineers and employees into similar roles.
  • Update critical information in a variety of electronic databases to be used company-wide.

Minimum Requirements:
  • or permanent resident
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial, Manufacturing or other STEM area of study. Four years of experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with technical competence in composite manufacturing, mechanical design, assembly, and test.
  • Willing to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Ability to spend up to 2 hours standing and able to lift 40lbs unassisted in order to complete required functions

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of lightweight spacecraft structures and mechanisms, composite materials, tooling/fixturing, instrumentation, data acquisition, thermal/mechanical testing is ideal.
  • Possess strong verbal and writing skills. Able to define and document processes, author and release manufacturing instructions and lead training programs.
  • Foundational experience with all aspects of composite production, including procurement of raw materials, design for manufacturing, coordination with design engineers, fabrication, capital equipment requirements for production, machining and quality techniques and ability to respect the level of detail necessary to produce quality aerospace composite hardware.
  • Possess experience or knowledge of some of the basic manufacturing engineering functions, including but not limited to- understanding application of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and tolerance principles, familiarity with machining processes, able to perform engineering drawing reviews, understanding of engineering requirements
  • Sensitivity to the critical tolerances which need to be tight tolerances and surface deviation.
  • Strong understanding of process creation, documentation and maintenance, especially in regards to effects on other departments/deliverables.
  • Foundational knowledge of process problem solving methodologies, i.e., value engineering, Six Sigma, lean manufacturing, Kaizen, etc.
  • Able to identify problems and take initiative to create a solution with acceptance from relevant stakeholders. Able to both generate new processes for new efforts and improve upon existing processes, taking ownership of process development and documentation
  • Ability to operate independently within broadly defined responsibilities and directions.
