We are currently seeking a Battery Cell Mechanical Design Engineer with practical experience in EV batteries and passion to advance battery cell technology. This position requires strong background in mechanical design and prototyping, particularly involving battery cell design. Our ideal candidate exhibits a can-do attitude and approaches their work with vigor and determination. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate excellence in their respective fields and possess the ability to learn quickly and to strive for perfection within a fast-paced environment. The Role:
  • Lead and execute development of new and innovative battery cell mechanical designs
  • Conduct industry research to understand cutting-edge cell design trends - integrate and improve on relevant concepts into our designs
  • Collaborate with cell materials scientists to co-develop and execute cell concepts to optimize performance such as energy density, power density, DCR, heat generation, and cycle life
  • Generate innovative cell concepts in collaboration with module and pack engineers, including detailed drawings and tolerances
  • Work with cross-functional teams to build and test battery cell prototypes
  • Lead failure analyses and experiments to propose design revisions and solutions
  • Author clear and concise documentation and design requirements to communicate with internal and external stakeholders
Qualifications:
  • Strong 3D CAD skills, with proficiency in at least one professional 3D CAD package
  • Direct experience in mechanical design of battery cell components
  • Direct hands-on experience building lithium ion battery cells; cell manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals with good understanding of material selection methodology and thermal analysis
  • Excellent problem solving and experimental design approach, driven by curiosity and attention to detail
  • Experience in experimental process, root cause analysis, and statistical analysis
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills in both technical and non-technical environments
  • At least a B.S. in mechanical engineering (or relevant) and at least 3 years of industry experience (fewer for candidates with advanced degrees)
