Maxar is currently seeking a Senior System Safety Engineer to join our team. This role is an exciting opportunity to work closely with NASA on the Power Propulsion Element (PPE) program, which is part of Gateway. In collaboration with the program safety team, you will be responsible for developing the analyses, requirements, and verifications needed to ensure the PPE system is safe for astronauts returning to the moon. The preferred location is Maxar's Palo Alto office, but the role can be based remotely in the areas around Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Arizona or Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with cross-functional team to lead risk-based hazard analysis at a system level, identify appropriate control and mitigation strategies, write and flow down safety requirements
  • Review system Con Ops, system architecture, and system design from a safety perspective, and collaborate on software, hardware, and operations systems designs to enhance the system safety to meet requirements
  • Collaborate with reliability engineers to produce complete and accurate reliability assessments, including Fault Tree Analysis (FTAs) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEAs)
  • Develop requirements for fault detection algorithms to mitigate safety hazards
  • Develop test plans to verify safety requirements and validate fault handling capabilities
  • Collaborate with subsystems engineers to flow safety requirements to suppliers and oversee compliance
  • Collaborate with NASA to ensure hazard analysis, safety requirements, and fault management strategy meet contract requirements
  • Prepare safety reports for NASA, including Hazard Reports, zero fault tolerance documentation, Human Error Analysis, Operating and Support Hazard Analysis
  • Lead Safety Reviews to describe and explain rigorous safety approach to the satisfaction of internal and external review board
  • Role model interpersonal behaviors that promote a healthy safety culture, including promoting psychological safety amongst a diverse team
  • Support the team in being resilient when priorities shift and believe in the capacity of all team members to learn and grow
  • Exhibit moral and interpersonal courage to speak up when safety deficiencies could impact program schedule and cost
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, STEM or a relevant technical field. Four years of additional experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in system safety engineering, systems engineering, functional safety, or other similar role. A master's degree will count toward two years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering throughout the product lifecycle, preferably with aerospace hardware or other safety-critical complex technical systems (e.g. self-driving vehicles, nuclear systems, medical devices)
  • Experience demonstrating technical compliance to rigorous safety standards (e.g. ISO 21448, ISO 26262, ISO 14971, IAEA Safety Standards, CMMI); preference for familiarity with NASA safety standards (NPT 8715.3, MIL-STD-882E)
  • Able to travel for periods of 2- 5 days on an occasional basis

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree or higher in engineering or relevant technical field
  • Experience using software tools for requirements management (e.g. DOORS, Jama, SysML)
  • Knowledge of USG space architectures, missions, systems, requirements, and acquisition methods required and be able to strategize unique solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust with internal and external team members, including fostering a culture of psychological safety and inclusion
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
