Maxar is seeking a Sr. Director of Mission Assurance to join our leadership team in Palo Alto, CA. In this role, you will guide an accomplished team which provides solutions and recommendations on flight-readiness, ensuring that our spacecraft are fully equipped to carry out successful missions. You will act as the technical owner and thought-leader, crafting and refining our future vision for a world-class Mission Assurance group.

In this role, you will provide independent technical assessments to the Senior Executive Committee and Program Management Offices (PMO). Additionally, you will
  • Review and certify the flight readiness of every spacecraft built by Maxar.
  • Provide senior representation for major Spacecraft Reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, FRR, MRR (Mission Readiness Review); provide input to solutions during early stages of implementation and design to increase technical strength maximizing likelihood of mission success
  • Evaluate acceptability of changes to mission critical hardware and software
  • Review and approve all technical disclosures to the insurance industry to ensure adequacy and consistency amongst programs
  • Provide senior technical leadership on all issues or anomalies impacting mission requirements or customer expectations that cannot be successfully resolved by program engineering teams.
  • Provide leadership in major FRB and MRB for efficient resolution
  • Provide consultation to all engineering organizations to ensure the proposed technical solutions are consistent with the Mission Assurance vision.
  • Escalation authority for disposition of MRB issues with unresolved root cause.
  • Provide an independent assessment for any engineer, e.g. in the case where they are not comfortable with directed solutions
  • Together with other engineering organizations, represents MSI on major technical issues and developments to the outside community; Customer community, Insurance community, and broader aerospace community.
  • Advocate for best engineering practices and best solutions; Invest in mentorship to achieve the Mission Assurance vision.
  • Collaborate with Product Strategy team to ensure Maxar core products meet the technical and operational needs for our fleet
  • Act as the "internal customer" for all new product developments
  • Define policy for minimum test and verification processes for Maxar spacecraft and component hardware
  • Provide management oversight for all mission operations from launch to handover to the customer
  • Define policy and best practices for mission operations to minimize risk and maximize mission success
  • Ensure all orbital anomalies are adequately investigated and resolved.
  • Ensure implications of any orbital anomalies on one spacecraft are implemented throughout the on-orbit fleet, factory, and product lines as appropriate

Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the willingness and ability to obtain a security clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or other STEM discipline
  • 20 years of experience in aerospace engineering, including progressive technical and engineering leadership roles
  • Knowledge of complex aerospace hardware processes related to manufacturing, integration and test of spacecraft and launch operations
  • Experience leading spacecraft Material Review Boards and Failure Review Boards
  • Anomaly resolution and mitigation experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills and customer relationship building which engender a strong sense of trust and credibility
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Strong team-building skills, demonstrated ability to effectively mentor and train team members
  • Broad technical understanding of space market segments
  • Technical understanding of different space missions, exhibiting knowledge of "new space," to drive technical requirements and associated Concepts of Operation
