POSITION SUMMARYUnder the direction of the Director of Health Information Services, the
Lead Coder provides day-to-day supervision of the Coders and teaches
coding techniques to staff throughout Marshall Medical Center to ensure
correct documentation for proper coding. Codes and abstracts all patient
types on a backup basis, reviewing and preparing reports to support the
Coders' completion of patient accounts. Uses coded data to create and
maintain department reports and complete special projects at the request
of the Director. Ensures that Coding policies and procedures are updated
and reviewed for approval. Works effectively with the Medical Records
clerical unit to ensure that reports and medical records are available
on a timely basis for coding review and that charts are made available
to the clerical unit for physician completion or continuity of patient
care. Works closely with the transcription unit to ensure that
transcribed medical records are available for coding completion.POSITION QUALIFICATIONSEducation/Licensure/ Certification:
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Associates Degree required.
Current Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health
Information Administrator (RHIA) from the American Health
Information Management Association (AHIMA) certification preferred.
Knowledge:
At least 2 years experience of directly related work experience in
inpatient acute care, hospital-based coding and abstracting for
IPPS/OPPS reimbursement using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding systems.
Demonstrated knowledge of MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, APCs, and reimbursement
schemes.
Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
required.
Working knowledge of Windows and Office based products (Word, Excel,
etc.) required.
Working knowledge of EPIC, 3M, Midas and OSHPD required.
One year of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
Skills:
Demonstrated effective leadership skills.
Excellent listening and coaching skills.
Experience with development of procedures and policies required.
Excellent written and oral communication skills including English
usage, grammar, punctuation and style required.
Demonstrated ability to work as a team player.
Ability to work under pressure under time constraints and to work
effectively amidst distraction required.
