Are you ready to take on the challenge to help us build the future?The Senior Controls Engineer will provide technical expertise and support to Protection Asset Engineering, Protection Execution & Substation Design Engineering personnel and other internal and external stakeholders. This position will provide technical leadership, consultation, and hands-on support to SCE’s Control & Meter strategies, related automation and control asset management, substation automation project sponsorship, bulk-power relay project sponsorship, sub-trans project sponsorship, design standards, distribution control and reference materials, work processes and procedures - and will develop tools to meet the evolving needs of the Control/Meter teams, in addition to any key partners. The Senior Controls Engineer will be encouraged to make significant contributions towards realizing Protection/Controls Engineering’s vision to provide asset management strategies and technical expertise/integration from transmission to distribution in the area of automation and controls.This position will report directly to the Engineering Manager of the Control & Meter Asset Engineering unit - under the Asset Management Strategy and Engineering (AMS&E) organization of Transmission & Distribution (T&D).A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

Provide technical consultation and support in creating standards in Protection Automation i.e. Human Machine Interface (HMI), Programmable Logic Controller(PLC), Substation Engineering Modeling Tool(SEMT), Node Category Standards, etc.).

Lead the identification, development, and documentation of new and/or modified automation and/or control-related design standards and requirements to meet emerging technical challenges on the SCE grid.

Provide asset recommendation for various types of automation schemes for Transmission, Sub transmission, and Distribution systems.

Direct or perform engineering tasks associated with critical engineering projects for several small complex projects that require specialized knowledge in specific areas.

Provide ad hoc technical consultation to help resolve novel or complex controls- related issues on the SCE grid.

Participate in department planning, provide budget recommendations and monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results.

Support obtaining relay events/system disturbances on Transmission/Distribution to assist in root cause analysis, corrective action plans and provide system/scheme improvements for data collection.

Support innovative solutions to Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration, Micro Grid design, and Distribution protection/controls.

Provide project sponsorship and mentorship in the area of Protection and Controls, work with Power System Operators, Program Engineers, Design Engineers and Substation Execution to integrate Capital Projects.

Develop and maintain SCE protection-related technical documentation and reference materials (e.g., automation philosophy documents, device setting guidelines, device application notes, internal work control procedures, etc.)

Provide ad hoc technical consultation and support on design/document for distribution automation and controls process and procedures.

Lead/Support Protection & Control/Meter Strategies team on pilot/demonstration projects to drive innovation for Distribution Control (e.g., Distribution Fault Anticipation (DFA), Fault Location Isolation and Service Restoration(FLISR), Early Fault Detection(EFD), High Impedance (Hi-Z), Grid Management System(GMS), and Microgrid).

Represent Control/Meter Strategies Team on selected industry technical committees and working groups (e.g., Substation Standards Review Team, Automation Technical Forum, IEEE Power System Relaying Committee, IEC TC 57 Power Systems Management and Associated Information Exchange, NATF System Protection Practices Group, etc.)

Support in all technical aspects involving Control/Meter Strategies Team roles/responsibilities.

Collaborate with T/D Apparatus & Linear Strategies, Protection Execution, Test & Technology, Grid Operations, Substation Construction & Maintenance, Telecom Engineering, and other internal partners to identify and implement process improvements.

QualificationsThe essentials

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field

Nine (9) years or more of combined engineering work experience in transmission or distribution automation, substation engineering, equipment commissioning, or apparatus engineering

The preferred

Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field

Licensed Professional Engineer

Project Management certification

Familiarity with SCE system protection practices, philosophies, and standards

Experience interpreting and/or designing electrical one-line, elementary, and protection/control logic diagrams

Familiarity with SCE substation design standards

Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in

Experience developing and communicating ideas and information effectively to diverse audiences through oral presentations and written communications
