Position Title: Engineering Assistant

Project Location: 431 Patterson Bridge Road, John Day, OR 97845

Position Summary: In partnership with the Mt. Adams Institute, the Malheur National Forest will sponsor a VetsWork AmeriCorps intern to work with the engineering department helping with the improvement of the deliverables of the forest. The selected applicant will assist the Road Manger/Assistant Road Manger with updating their database (INFRA) with road related engineering data describing road features. A GIS program (ARCMAP) will be used to display the road's layer containing the road features stored in INFRA. The two programs will be used together to update the INFRA database. Classroom and hands on training will be provided throughout the 45 week period illustrating how to use GIS, INFRA and several other programs needed to perform the duties. Research into historic paper records to validate some road's data may be required. Field work opportunities would involve validating existing data, installing road signs and collecting new road information. Other field opportunities may exist to support the road maintenance crews and other engineering staff.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to):

1. Assist road manger/assistant road manger with updating and managing the forest roads database and the spacial GIS roads layer.

2. Update corporate database with road related data.

3. Field work to support the road maintenance crews and other engineering staff.

4. Organize and file hard copies of road information.

5. Install fiberglass road signs throughout the forest.

Position Requirements:

1. Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation. Must comply with Driver Certification and Safety Agreement (see VetsWork Application Documents on website).

2. Attend a mandatory orientation in Corbett, OR from 2/4 to 2/8, quarterly Intern trainings in Trout Lake, WA (food and lodging provided for orientation and trainings), and quarterly Intern meetings.

3. Ability and willingness to serve outdoors.

4. Ability to walk over light terrain.

5. Ability to perform moderate physical labor: lift 30 lbs. and dig post holes.

6. Ability to drive 4x4 Pickup Truck.

7. Demonstrate problem solving skills.

8. Meet with and deal with the public and engage with sometimes hostile public.

9. Ability to work independently.

10. Strong computer ability and proficient with WORD and EXCEL. Ability to be proficient with GIS (ARCMAP) 8 weeks after provided training. Ability to learn handheld GPS equipment operation.

11. Ability to operate a digital camera and download pictures onto computer.

12. Ability to exercise good judgment in difficult situations.

13. Meet other requirements of federal employee (eg. background check).

14. Must have served in US Armed Forces and have a DD214 with an honorable discharge.

15. 21 years of age at beginning of service term.

16. U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.

17. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to receiving an education award.

18. Ability to commit to the full 45-week term of service.
